Things I adore about the USA and Americans

No special reason... and it doesn't have to be things other people all agree with.

We're planning a holiday there in a couple of years to see some family so the wonderfulness of the USA is particularly on my mind. But am just thinking about how much I love it.

I'll bring up Senator George Mitchell, who gave years of his life to somehow bring the best out of every politician in Northern Ireland and made it possible for the Good Friday Agreement to be made.

I'll bring up American health care. Because although I don't want to change our system to theirs, the fact is that if you either have good insurance or nothing at all, you can have the best care in the world.

And the Grand Canyon. Not sure I've ever been speechless the way I was the first time I saw it.

I'm wondering if we can drop in to see some distant cousins of my partner's who live in Ohio. We've met once at a wedding. Of all the countries in the world, we can be pretty sure that they will be welcoming and happy to see us. ❤️

I love the friendliness of the Americans we met. We went a bit off the tourist routes with friends who are from another part of America and everyone we met was pleasant, friendly and polite.
I do understand not everybody is like that all the time but it was a very pleasant change from some parts of Europe!

TeaHagTeaBag · 13/10/2024 18:06

I love the mini markets (bodegas?) in the middle of big cities.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 13/10/2024 18:11

Wonderful writers for children. Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, to name but two.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/10/2024 18:13

Rare burgers. Oh, and Denny's.

littlebilliie · 13/10/2024 18:15

Friendly open people

Terrribletwos · 13/10/2024 18:18

@QueenOfHiraeth
Yes, I found this too. Was amazed at how friendly and open the Americans were here in Europe and in the US, it was refreshing.

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 13/10/2024 18:21

I love America. The people are really confident and straightforward. I love the big beautiful houses on the east coast, the mom and pop diners, the lovely drawl when they speak, the comfy cars, big roads,Dennys, Ihop and Waffle house.
Crazy beautiful place.

Breathtaking small New England towns like Woodstock, Vermont and Rockport, Maine

Lobster rolls

The friendly service at supermarkets

Great movies, music and really decent people. Beautiful landscape and incredible cities.

Torememberwhenlifewasbetter · 13/10/2024 18:26

I always wanted to move there, since I was a little child…I haven’t done for years as people mostly slag America off. Reading with interest

ANGIEPANGY77 · 13/10/2024 18:28

As an American, it is refreshing to know everyone doesn't hate us!

GiddyRobin · 13/10/2024 18:29

One of my dearest friends is American. I love her so much, she's the warmest and kindest woman I've ever met. I know that doesn't mean all Americans are, but she is and she's what I think of when someone mentions America.

Pastlast · 13/10/2024 18:29

I love the variety of communities and landscapes. How friendly everyone is. The sandwiches OmG they are amazing. The beaches, especially along the 101. Route 66. New York in the fall. I could go on.

YellowphantGrey · 13/10/2024 18:31

The primitive style you just don't get in the UK. The home decor mags, bookstores, Christmas decs, exciting cities, route 66 and Graceland!

Pallisers · 13/10/2024 18:31

My niece and her friends visited me here in the US recently and they were amazed at how helpful everyone was - like coming up to them in the train station and asking if they needed help if they were looking at a map.

I do like the sense of community here. And I second the praise of George Mitchell (and Madeline Albright too).

And the Red Sox!

Coastal Virginia

Tooty78 · 13/10/2024 18:41

I love the Deep South Charleston and Savannah are my favourite cities, the architecture of some of the houses are gorgeous. The coastline is amazing, miles of beaches, and the small towns are so friendly.
We once spent an amazing 4th July in Southport, watching the parade down the main st, people were offering us food and drink and inviting us sit with them and their families. Then after dark watched a spectacular firework display on the river at Wilmington.

The friendliness of Americans is always a big draw for us.

DeanElderberry · 13/10/2024 18:45

All the trees.

cheezncrackers · 13/10/2024 18:47

I love American optimism and confidence and how friendly people are. The customer service is streets ahead of Europe too. And I like the comfort and space. It's an easy place to travel, well signposted, access is well thought out, there are always public loos and water fountains!

MyFavouritePlace · 13/10/2024 18:47

I too love the US, nice friendly people. Really enjoy every visit I make.

CharlotteLightandDark · 13/10/2024 18:51

I’d love to spend proper time there, only been to Orlando Disney but would be amazing to explore as much as possible. My dad follows NFL and the New England Patriots, they’ve been to visit Maine a few times and love it.

TomPinch · 13/10/2024 18:52

American politics may be crazy but regardless of that I've liked every American I've ever met.

PermanentTemporary · 13/10/2024 18:52

I was just watching some SNL clips and laughing so much. God I miss proper sketches in the UK. So many great American female comics with stellar careers - Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon i love. And so many Black British actors who couldn't get jobs over here but have good careers in the US.

Id love to visit Savannah. We're finally going to visit more national parks next time, including Yosemite. Sounds mind blowing.

Long long ago I spent 2 months in NYC. Just fantastic. I spent a day queuing in Central Park to see Shakespeare in the Park, free. Morgan Freeman and Tracey Ullman.

The community feel, the warmth and the friendliness.
I also really like the confidence that Americans have.
love the supermarkets and the especially the choices available.
American cars and their Highways (not so much the American driving ha).
The diverse landscapes we once drove from Vegas to Mammoth like going from extreme heat to snow was an experience.
