Ever taken IKEA BILLY tall bookcase apart and successfully put it back together?

i want to transport the tall BIlly bookcase but am loathed to hire a van as that’s the only item.
i have a VW up!.
the easiest solution is to take
Billy apart - but it’s 20 years old and am worried it won’t re-make.
Anyone done the same recently and it all worked fine?

Probably cheaper to buy a new one (or look on marketplace in new location) than hire a van anyway!

Yeah it’s doable, just be gentle to avoid gouging any internal joins and maybe use some wood glue when putting back together. The most annoying thing will be the thin backboard tacked into place with about 50 nails…

Yes we did it a few times with our 2 Billy bookcases - we didn't have the backboards attached though! Used an electric screwdriver to unmake and remake and went gently.

Good point! @TeenToTwenties
OMG, I'd forgotten old style back boards have a zillion random pins.
Just realised, it has to go in a lift at the other end, so disassembling will be the only way...
@alwaysmovingforwards @SatinHeart feeling more confident, thank you

Yes, we bought one second hand years ago and it had to be taken apart. Just moved house and did it again. It's a pain, but not horrendous.

Like pp said , it’s the back board which is a pain and it chips easily when the nails come out at an angle . We now have 2 we use without back boards .

Honestly I have come to learn that the only way IKEA furniture is ‘cheap‘ is if you barely ever move house.. never managed to reconstruct it properly. At least these days I think IKEA has some kind of recycling scheme for its single use furniture
