Can you turn the heating on if your mains water is switched off?

Just that really

Combi boiler, just want to know if it’s safe or will cause boiler issues to have the heating on if the water to the property is switched off? Would only be for a few hours.

The heating and hot water should be separate, but if the mains are off I would imagine some air bubbles would get in the system, so you might need to bleed your radiators once it's all settled again.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it unless it was a dire situation - especially if it's an older boiler I couldn't afford going wrong this side of winter.

I could be overly cautious!

They’ve only been off two days (we are away) but the house has dropped to 13 so I’m hoping to warm it up a little. It’s hard to know what to do though!

Why is your water switched off?

Timeforabiscuit · 13/10/2024 08:56

Is it a dampish poorly vented property? Or a dry well ventilated one?

At lower temperature any water will start condensing and you start getting risk of mould, although I think this takes a few more days to show.

If you know you've got damp issues, I'd risk turning the heating on as no-one wants to replace mouldy upholstery.

I have never ever in my life turned my water off when I've gone on holiday
Are you sure that's a condition of your insurance?

That sounds very odd. Are you sure?
