Can anyone recommend a non-fiction book for a 16 year old please?

I can't remember what's it's called but it's about Bletchley Park, gave it to a relative last Christmas who loved it and promptly booked tickets to Bletchley itself.

Biography about favourite sportsman or film star?

PermanentTemporary · 12/10/2024 18:47

Any clues on what they like?

Touching the Void by Joe Simpson
Hello World: how to be human in the age of the machine by Hannah Fry
My name is Why by Lemn Sissay

Something about what he's interested in. Can you give us a clue?

I just got my 16 year old DS. A City on Mars Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through? By Kelly and Zach Weinersmith and he really likes it.

Beezknees · 12/10/2024 18:49

Tough to say without knowing what's he into. What are his interests?

VintagePage · 12/10/2024 20:28

Thanks everyone - going to Google these right now!

He's into history and science, not very sporty

Which era of history? Stephen Frys books on Greek mythology are great.

VintagePage · 12/10/2024 20:43

Great suggestion, thanks. I'm not entirely sure to be honest - don't see him all that often

Definitely give us a clue as to interests. I recently bought Otherlands about what Earth was like millions of years ago, written by a palaeontologist - Halliday - can’t remember first name. Maybe an interesting subject for a 16 year old nerdy type?

Sorry only just realised you PP citing interests. Maybe my suggestion is worth looking at. I can also recommend The Wolf Age by Tore Skeie - like the plot of Vikings and Vikings Valhalla, but real.

Terry Deary (who write Horrible Histories) has a new book for adults out called something like by "A History of Britain in 10 Enemies". It's funny, and has great reviews. I'm going to get it for DS's (16) stocking.

Endurance by Alfred Lansing -Shackleton s journey to the Antarctic- what the human body can survive is amazing. My son read it after me.
An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris is a good page turner based on fact - the Dreyfus Affair but quite a long read.

CurlewKate · 13/10/2024 10:31

Jon Ronson. In particular The Men Who stared at Goats.

Zooeyzebra · 13/10/2024 10:37

Shoe Dog the story of the Nike founder, my son has read it several times. He quite likes biographies of various people. Also The Happiest Refugee by Ahn Doh

Zooeyzebra · 13/10/2024 10:40

Also very much enjoyed What If by Randall Monroe - more science and pretty funny

VintagePage · 13/10/2024 20:46

I'm bookmarking all these suggestions and what I don't get him now, I'll keep for Christmas ideas!

Thanks all! 😁

I have a history obsessed DS who loved Adventures InTime, The Second World War by Dominic Sandbrook.

I think it is actually part of a series covering different areas of history.
