5 minute presentation

I have to do a 5 minute presentation on a hobby or interest at work.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I have nothing at all I can think of! I don't really have hobbies except like reading and I don't really have anything I'm interested in that is suitable to talk about at work, like murder mysteries and things!

I have literally no idea what I can talk about!! I don't know if they will ask questions so don't want to pretend I like something for the sake of the talk plus they know me and if I go in and say how much I love skydiving they will know it's not true!!

Any suggestions Confused

I think murder mysteries sounds great - it will probably make for an interesting presentation 😁

Here are some of my suggestion - you could maybe embellish a little?

Walking
Cooking
A specific author you like
Travelling
Did you collect anything as a child you can now claim is a retro collection

Good luck!

Urgh how awful.

What's the purpose? Is this a team bonding, ice breaker type thing or are they evaluating your presentation skills?

If it's the former I wouldn't worry about hitting the five minutes, everyone will be delighted if you're done after three. If they're evaluating you you obviously need to take it a bit more seriously.

Btw I think reading, including murder mysteries, is a perfectly acceptable topic to choose. You only need 5 slides (and even if you're not doing slides use that idea to structure) so I'd do with:

  • You've chosen reading, always loved it etc
  • why you like it (escapism)
  • favoured genres (murder absolutely fine)
  • favourite authors
  • What's next on your list

Job done. Feel free to bluff the favourite genres/authors a bit if you don't want to reveal anything personal.

Do you go on holiday? Could you talk about your last trip?

Say your hobby is travelling.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/10/2024 12:07

Do you listen to music? You could do a presentation on your favourite artist/album?

corlan · 12/10/2024 12:11

Murder mysteries is a really popular genre. I'd love to hear a talk on why you read them, maybe with a couple of examples of cases that have really interested you.

Talk on Mumsnet 🤣

notprincehamlet · 12/10/2024 12:13

The subject doesn't matter, they just want to see how you go about preparing it, delivering it and then chatting about it (I think). (I did one on Marmite.)

Notagain24 · 12/10/2024 12:23

I think travel is a good idea, you can present on a place you've been too, easy to get images online or use holiday pics, and you can decide how to pitch it - focus on history, archicture, food, whatever, and you don't need to expose too much of yourself.

DreadPirateRobots · 12/10/2024 12:24

Do the murder mysteries. I'd do a bit about the history of murder mysteries, what I like about them, job done.

midgetastic · 12/10/2024 12:37

Murder mysteries are fine to talk about - why do you like them in particular , your favourite author or book

LynnAP · 12/10/2024 19:22

Thanks for all the ideas!

it is something I am being judged on but was very clear it should be on anything that is a hobby or interest rather than something showing why I'd be good at a certain type of job if that makes sense.

I think I'm too scared to do true crime etc as someone said something in a meeting once and the higher ups thought was inappropriate and it was something about a famous death, it wasn't derogatory or anything so I think it is too risky because of that, I didn't think there was anything wrong with what was said but the fact they did is a good sign they won't like true crime.

I think I will go with reading, I will mention and possible slightly exaggerate a book club I sort of attended, that way I can talk about the social side of it and also getting out of comfort zone reading other people's suggestions etc and giving and hearing opinions etc
