Where can I get help writing a complaint letter to GP?

19 replies

Icanseeinthedark · 11/10/2024 23:44

My literacy skills are pretty poor and after so many failures and negligence from my GP practice, I feel the need to put a complaint in to have my file looked into.

I want to get this right and I don't want to make myself look like an idiot as I am not very good at articulating my thoughts and words.

Is there any technology, websites or software I can use to assist me with my writing? I don't often write anything these days, so I'm very out of the loop with this sort of thing.

Chat gpt is fantastic or just Google a model complaint letter for GP.s.

Cormoran · 12/10/2024 06:33

Exactly that. Use https://chatgpt.com it is free, you don't need an account. Explain what happen and it will tailor made a letter for you leaving out the emotional bits .

Try searching for advocacy services in your area or ask for the complaints leaflet/information for your surgery as that should have details of advocacy organizations.

Just be warned that complaining about GPs is notoriously difficult & very few complaints are upheld. It's not the same as complaints elsewhere in the NHS or other organizations.

Maybe someone on here could do it it you give a list of the problems and dates -though not the exact health issues if you don’t want to out yourself

I was going to say Citizens Advice Bureau

The practice actually has an obligation not to discriminate against those with literacy difficulties, you can actually ask to do a verbal complaint. This may be via telephone where it can be recorded or it may be that one if their staff members transcribes it for you.

Some great suggestions, thank you.
I think that asking citizens advice for some help might be a good idea. I have no idea where to start!
Chat gpt isn't something I've used before but I've heard of it. I'll look into it this weekend.
Thanks for all the tips.

Please be careful with any AI software like ChatGPT not to include any personal identifying information or anything so specific it could be traced back to you. For example give a fake doctor's name and just replace it after or if your condition and treatment are very unusual id maybe use a more general example just to get the key phrases. There have been some questions about the way it handles data.

olympicsrock · 12/10/2024 09:08

There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with your writing here! Just read it through carefully and use a spell checker.

CrumbleintheJungle · 12/10/2024 09:10

Your post was written perfectly, by the way. Just thought you'd like to know.

  1. First open a document and make a bullet point list of the points you need to make. Leave it a bit and then come back to it. Do your bullet points cover absolutely everything you want to say?
  2. On a computer (assuming you can access one) start a blank document and put the opening (Addresses, Dear Sir or Madam), and the close (Thank you for you attention in this matter. Yours sincerely, YOUR FULL NAME).
  3. SAVE your document with a relevant name.
  4. Now consider that you have three to five paragraphs to open your case, make the most important points and then finish. Make a plan, for example in the space for paragraph one, choose some of your bullet points to mention, copy and paste the points directly into the space from your list into your letter. Then the same for paragraph two and three, until you have covered all the points.
  5. Now expand the bullet points into full sentences.
  6. Leave it for a bit so you can go back with fresh eyes.
  7. Read it aloud. Does it make sense? Change any parts that can be improved, leave it again and then read it out loud again.
  8. Ask a very trusted person to read what you have written and given you feedback.

@amoreoamicizia
Amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to write that out for me, it's exactly what I need.

No problem, it's funny these days how we often don't write letters any more unless for work but it can then come up when it's really important.

(Ironically, I've just spotted a typo in what I wrote but can't edit. 😁 "Thank you for your attention in this matter").

LadyLolaRuben · 12/10/2024 09:49

NHS Director here. There are NHS Complaint Advocates who help people through the complaints process. An internet search will signpost you to how to request one

Icanseeinthedark · 12/10/2024 10:09

@LadyLolaRuben
Thanks. I didn't know this was a thing. I'll look into it.
