I’ll try and keep it concise! I have 2 DC age 5 and 7 and a very hands on DH who works 9-5:45 but can be flex for drop off/pick up.
Last year I worked 3 days at one job and 1 day at another. The 1 day job was finite and finished and now I need to up my hours for the ££. My current job have offered me an extra half day and now the other job has offered me the same job again! Which means 4.5 days….I’m not sure I can manage this. I’m also doing a masters and love being around for the kids so would rather stick with 4 if poss. So which option would you go for?

Option A- do it all!
M- 8-6
T- 8:30-2
W- 9-5
T- 9-5
F- 9-12:30

Total hours 32.5 income after childcare £2306/m

Option B- stick with just main job
M- 8-6
T- 8:30-2
W- Off
T- 9-5
F- 9-12:30

Total hours 25.5 income after childcare £2036

Option C- ask to compress main job hours + 1 day/week job
M- 8-6
T- off
W- 9-5
T- 9-5
F- 9-6

Total hours 32.5 income after childcare £2200

Option D- compress main job only
M- 8-6
T- off
W- off
T- 9-5
F- 9-6

total hours 25.5 income after childcare £2100

On the days I finish after school hours kids would go to ASC picked up by me or Dh. DH would drop when I start at 8.

Option A – Do it all!

  • Pros: Maximized income and work hours.
  • Cons: High demand on time (32.5 hours) with little downtime for studying, personal time, or family. Risk of burnout since you’re juggling work, a master's, and family life.
  • Best for: If financial gain is the primary goal and you feel confident you can manage your time well without excessive stress.
Option B – Stick with just the main job
  • Pros: More manageable work hours (25.5), with a full day off midweek. Allows for greater flexibility for childcare, study, or personal time. Less chance of burnout.
  • Cons: Lower income, though it’s still significant (£2,036).
  • Best for: If work-life balance, especially time for your master's and family, is the priority. A midweek break gives breathing space for studies.
Option C – Compress main job hours + 1 day/week job
  • Pros: A balance between increased income (£2,200) and a compressed schedule. You maintain the full workweek without spreading out hours too thin.
  • Cons: Longer working days could reduce energy for other tasks, including studies, but still a solid option to increase income without overloading.
  • Best for: If you want a bit more income while keeping a manageable structure, allowing one day off for studying or family.
Option D – Compress main job only
  • Pros: A balanced option with compressed hours (25.5), allowing 2 full days off midweek for rest, study, or family time. Slightly higher income than Option B (£2,100).
  • Cons: Potentially longer workdays could be tiring, but this setup offers significant time for other commitments.
  • Best for: If maintaining work-life balance is key while ensuring a slightly better financial outcome than Option B.

Since you value time with your children and are working on your master's, Option D seems to strike the best balance.

it may not be perfect but as long as it helps is the main thing

I'd do option B to allow children shorter days and you more time with them after school.
