Hi,

DD is currently going through what we suspect is a gastro bug. She's been sick for a few days now and I'm just wondering how long does the sickness last?

She started nursery at the start of September and initially got a cough and a cold and then got Bronchiolitis and now she's got a gastro bug... I feel so tired. Its constant. I feel like I can't catch a break. Sorry I don't mean to sound selfish.

She was initially sick on Monday night. Then supposedly nothing all day Tuesday (she was at nursery and they didn't report her being sick, just that she wasn't herself and didn't really want to eat) then she was sick on Tuesday night and was sick pretty much after every bottle/meal yesterday. Called the doctor who said that it was probably gastro and that I should just give her liquids. Today she'd probably only kept one/two-ish bottles down and is still being sick when having anything more than an oz or two.

She's still had wet nappies. Quieter than usual. When will it pass? Online it says two days but it's been longer than that.

Thanks

How old is she? Does she have a temp?

user242526 · 10/10/2024 19:23

Sorry forgot to mention she's 10 months and no temp

My 11 month old very recently had a vomiting stint and she's never been a baby that pukes a lot. She got what I thought was a cold at first, lots of snot and every night before bed she would vomit what seemed like her entire stomach content. She had two days of that then a day with no vomiting and then a further 4 days of vomiting before it finally stopped. Doctor said it was probably from mucus build up/cough triggering the vomit reflex. I now just think it was part of a nasty virus going round as my partner subsequently got sick and had similar symptoms. Hopefully it will pass for your little one soon but I do appreciate how worrying and stressful it is

i would keep a very very close eye on her nappies and if there is the slightest hint that they are less heavy or fewer wet ones in quantity then take her straight to be seen by a doctor. Dehydration is the biggest concern here. You could also try feeding 1-2 oz every 60 min to see if the smaller amount means she can keep it down. If she is struggling with milk, then try some cooled boiled water for a few hours to see if that makes it without being vomited back. Dont try any foods at all. If she isnt drinking substantially more by lunch tomorrow, then take her to the dr anyway. Little babies dehydrate v quickly

Its constant. I feel like I can't catch a break.

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but she threw up Monday night and then was at nursery Tuesday? Part of the reason you feel like you can't catch a break is other parents doing things like this and sending unwell children in to nursery.

It sounds like it's been about 72 hours? I think that's within the range of normal, if just at the longer end. But I agree with PPs about watching out for any dehydration. I'd give very small amounts at a time. If necessary I'd go to the point of a couple of sips, then 10 mins later a couple more. It sounds like she's already keeping down a bit more than that, but little and often is the best way.
And then be careful about reintroducing too much food too quickly. My DD once threw up Wednesday/Thursday, fine for a few days, then threw up Monday night. I think it was probably the yoghurt she'd had which in hindsight was a bad idea.

@DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace thank you for the advice.

I sent her in because on Monday night it was just the one episode of her being sick and sometimes she has the odd throwing up episode as she has really bad reflux and can over eat sometimes so that's what I initially thought. She also has CMPA and as she was fine in the morning before nursery I assumed it was probably a one off or that something she ate didn't agree with her or something. I didn't knowingly send her in with a bug because all day Tuesday she wasn't sick (nursery would've called if she was) and then when she came home it wasn't until she was asleep at night that she was sick and then was sick the majority of yesterday and some of today

@SeaToSki thank you for your advice. I'll try little and often with the milk and see how that goes. The doctor said that as long as she has three wet nappies then that's fine and the hospital wouldn't really be able to do much in that situation either. It's if she's not had a wet nappy for hours and hours (can't remember exactly how many hours) then she'd need to be seen.

@Goldenmimx it's awful. The poor thing hasn't been able to catch a break. It's one thing after another - but u suppose that's nursery for you :/ sometimes I regret sending her to nursery as when I was giving her a bath earlier I noticed she'd lost so much weight in the last month from all the illnesses she's had recently

My DD starts in January and I'm dreading what will probably be the inevitable constant bugs. It's awful when they're ill and suffering and it does just throw everything off. I really hope this is the last of it. Solidarity. Such a crap time of the year for this as well
