Do your three / four year olds know many songs?

DS is 4 in a couple of months and I realised from a casual sort of conversation yesterday that he doesn’t really (to my knowledge) know any songs other than nursery rhymes and Fat Lee’ Vindaloo Hmm because DH played it over and over before the euros this year! I suppose I’m kind of wondering if I should make more of an effort to play music round him?

3 year old knows all the standards for a 3 year old girl, frozen, all the Disney songs, musical soundtracks etc but she’s not interested in pop music yet.

Oh do, I've never met a young child that doesn't love music. I work with this age and they are extremely good at learning lyrics too even if it's jibberish to them. Some are indifferent to adult music but all seem to instinctively love toddler music, and high pitched tones.

DS isn’t interested in Disney yet (I have tried!) - he does enjoy and know a range of nursery rhymes but I suppose I’m thinking of music like the Beatles, or Scarborough fair or something … traditional (sort of!) songs!

He knows loads of toddler type music but I suppose he’s outgrowing toddler stuff (if that makes sense) and he’s at school next year.

Apologies I missed that part of your post!

My son is nearly 4 and he knows lots of nursery rhymes and kids' songs. Only grown song I can think of immediately that he knows is Shake It off. I think there's plenty of time to introduce him to other music.

AtomicBlondeRose · 10/10/2024 08:48

There’s a good DAB/Streaming radio station called Fun Kids (I think there’s a preschool version too) which has all child friendly music, no news or long talky sections. DD is 10 and we still like it as it has a mix of silly songs, Disney type stuff and current pop (all very sanitised). That’s how I know most pop music tbh as I don’t tend to listen to music radio otherwise.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 10/10/2024 08:53

My 3 year old doesn't know mainstream songs, mainly because we aren't much of a music playing family.

My 6.5 year old knows a few tunes but mainly from birthday parties and school parties!

I don't think it's a problem if you don't listen to music at home. My home is loud enough without extra noise!

GoldyHorn · 10/10/2024 09:00

When you say nursery rhymes do you mean Humpty Dumpty and the like or the more sophisticated Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and London Bridge is falling down?

I really don't think he's going to be singled out at school because he's the only four year old who doesn't have knowledge of the Beatles discography!

Kids music is fine because....he's a kid!

Danikm151 · 10/10/2024 09:07

Get your kid to watch the trolls films- a month in and my son sings loads of songs!

Hoplolly · 10/10/2024 09:08

Loads, because I listen to a lot of music but he'll still want the same three on repeat.

I don’t think I said I thought he’d be singled out at school; my point was more that he’s not a toddler Smile

No, but you're allowed to like kids music beyond toddlerhood. It's not wind the bobbin up and then the day you turn three straight to Scarborough Fair.

If you want him to listen to other music then do, but honestly don't worry that he's too old for kids music because he's three and will be starting school soon! He's got plenty of time to develop his musical tastes.

lemaste · 10/10/2024 10:07

DD is 2 and knows most nursery rhymes, all the Frozen and Moana soundtracks, some Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz songs, and some songs from our weekly music class (written for the class). And a bunch of lullaby songs that I sing at night. She sings a lot!

TheSandgroper · 10/10/2024 10:14

Cars don’t have cd players any more. We had nursery rhymes, folk songs, Christmas carols, Rolf Harris and the Wiggles.

I eventually got to the point where I had a rare day in the car to myself and only woke up to/turned off the nursery rhymes as I drove back into my own street. Yeah, that was a bit of a bummer.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 10/10/2024 19:45

@notarisingfan I told the kids in my room age 3 to 4.5 today that I would play requests. We have a Spotify account. This is what they said:
'Elsa'
Let it go
Encanto (numerous requests)
We will rock you
Hey mickey (the 80s pop song, not a mickey Disney thing)
Flowers by Miley Cyrus (specifically requested like this)
Dirty old town by the Pogues
Various TV theme tunes.

It always amuses me to ask. A few years ago someone asked for anything by AC/DC!! Apart from Disney songs they always love 'Can't stop the feeling' and 'I like to move it move it'. Dance songs with a strong consistent beat are usually popular.

Girasoli · 10/10/2024 20:13

DS2 4.5 knows quite a few bits of pop/rock songs (DS1 likes listening to music) and hymns from church. He also knows lots of silly versions of songs - thanks DH!

He doesn't know many Disney songs - sadly neither DC have much interest in watching Disney Princess movies with mummy.
