Lego for child

Getting a birthday present for an 8yo's birthday party. The parent suggested Lego as a gift. I thought about £15-20 would do but Lego is a lot more expensive than I expected! I didn't like anything less than £25, and the cool stuff is in the £35-45 range.

What's the expectation for birthday presents? Should I aim for the age range or can I go slightly higher?

Try Argos, they often have good deals on Lego or go for a brick box, so they can add to existing sets - https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/lego%c2%a0classic-medium-creative-brick-box-10696?istCompanyId=1e096408-041f-4238-994e-a7cf46bf9413&istFeedId=689af7a8-5842-4d88-be59-1ee5688a81b5&istItemId=ixtapriwm&istBid=t

How about a few mystery mini figures?

There are lots of Lego-compatible brands that you could look at instead if you have time to order online. Mega Construx, Pantasy, Sembo and Fun Whole off the top of my head.

Get 2 of these, put one in the cupboard for another present.

The creator 3 in 1 stuff seems to be popular for birthday presents among that age, usually around the £15 mark.

Seems a fair swap.

As the mother of a Lego addicted 5 year old, please don’t buy the compatible sets- they don’t work as well as you would expect with branded Lego.
We are always happy to receive the smaller sets, or sets outside his age range cos we tend to save them up and hand them out when boredom strikes throughout the year (last year he got about 30 sets for Xmas/birthday and he’s only just finished the last one)

Don't do this. Lego collectors hate mixing lego with knock offs.

I tend to buy lego sets on the 2 for 1 offer or 3 for one and stick them in the wardrobe for the next party. I try to find ones that are unisex. As already said argos is great. They often also do 2 sets for 30 quid.

Or give the other set to your own dc for Christmas. If bought in bulk it will come out to be around 15 quid ish per set.

What about something like this? My son loves these...

I appreciate you are no doubt well meaning but I agree with other posters- please don’t get fake Lego. It is consistently terrible and a waste of money.

We only do Megablox for the Pokémon licensed sets. They're not as good as Lego especially for small fingers.

Creator 3 in ones and smaller sets under £15 are great. 3 in 1 dinosaurs and the one with the shark are usually on offer fairly regularly.
