Psychotherapist, counsellor, cbt?

We are looking to get our 12yr old some help with anxious thoughts and fears. (Have already gone down ASD route - was assessed but did not meet criteria).

Who is best placed to help? I have contacted a child psychotherapist who specialises in play therapy and humanistic counselling. They are keen to meet but say we may need more of a cbt based approach which they are not specialist in, though they do use some cbt based techniques.

The other option so far is a child counselling service. They have said they offer integrative therapy, which pulls from different models of therapy including CBT.

Is either what we need? I’m not really sure what we need as not 100% sure what we are dealing with. DD is a classic over thinker, if something that she perceives to be “bad” happens she gets stuck in negative thought patterns that tend to lead to a fear/avoidance of doing that thing again. She isn’t self harming, suicidal or anything like that, she is mostly happy but we really think she needs to get some tools to help manage her day to day worries and fears. She is open to this as she would like to be able to do some of the things that her fears and worries are holding her back from but finds it very hard to change her thought pattern .

No harm in having a free/no obligation chat with Therese Langford of https://www.facebook.com/calmmindhypnotherapy - she specialises in anxiety and mental health issues in children.

Thank you! I think I need someone face to face though.

I think I'd go for the child counselling service. They will probably be able to match your dd to the best counsellor, following assessment. They will have group supervision, a range of strategies to draw from, knowledge of where to signpost you etc.

For my daughter we started with anti anxiety supplements from a naturopath, pulled her out of school and began online schooling, aimed for Ds and not As, and got her into counseling. After about 2 years detox her nervous system is starting to calm down and she’s a happy kid.

She will be taking alternate pathways to university though, there was no way she was going to achieve anything in mainstream highschool with her mental health intact. You have to work out your priorities, and I put the academic achievement at the bottom of the pile
