How do you pronounce these 2 words and where are you from? I’ve heard them on tv said a lot different to how I say them.

  1. ate…I said ‘et’ as in let, met, bet etc
  2. jude…like dude, food, mood

from the north of Ireland

I pronounce ate the same way I'd say eight and Jude like dude.

WillowTit · 08/10/2024 18:23

Jude, ate the food 8 times

Isthiscorrect · 08/10/2024 18:23

I have a friend called Jude and absolutely everyone sings hey Jude in first meeting. I'm guessing that's how most (all) people would pronounce it.
Jude to rhyme with dude, mood, food.

WillowTit · 08/10/2024 18:24

well exactly,
Hey Jude

Irridescantshimmmer · 08/10/2024 18:27

Ate like 8
Jude like dude

Lancashire

Liv999 · 08/10/2024 18:31

I say them the exact same way as you OP, I'm from the west of Ireland

rosieandjay · 08/10/2024 18:33

Sorry what? Obviously English speaking people will pronounce them exactly the same. So what are you getting at?

Ate and ate are different to me depending on where they are in a sentence

Snap. Sometimes I pronounce it "ett".

Threewheeler1 · 08/10/2024 18:36

As in "I ett all the chocolate. Sorry"

Are like eight
Jude like jui as in juice with the d on the end
(Scotland)

Which is how the Coop managed to have "Good with Food"😅 rhyming in their adverts

tuvamoodyson · 08/10/2024 19:10

Ate = 8
Jude = Rude/food/mood.

ImADeadGirlWalking · 09/10/2024 07:54

Mostly like eight but sometimes like ett, but I'd spell it eat if I was pronouncing it ett, which I would usually prounouce as eet! Confusing much?! 😅

It's not obvious at all, or even true!
Accents are a thing 😉
