Date of diagnosis - medical - Insurance Issue

Without going into the finer details we have been refused travel insurance because my DH has been diagnosed with early Non Hokinson's Lymphoma and a watch and wait diagnosis. The medical team knew in June 24 but offered him a non urgent appointment in Oct to tell him.

The insurance company are saying that they need 12 weeks from diagnosis and the fact he wasnt told for a number of months is neither here or there!

We have a holiday booked and paid for going in Nov 24. If they take the date of diagnosis as the date he was TOLD we are struggling. However if they take the medical professions view of diagnosis we should be OK. GP is quite happy to confirm all of this for insurance company but they are still sticking firm.

Is someone playing with words here? Is it me?

There could have been a scenario where we went on holiday say July and didnt know he wouldnt be covered because it wasnt deemed urgent enough from a medical viewpoint to tell him. Husband isnt in the best of health and this is a new health issue but everything else is covered. Its just this new one.

Can anyone objectively tell me whether I am going mad and missing the point or are they. Its a specialist insurance company btw. Their people should be well trained because of what they are dealing with

Isnt there usually an invalidation of insurance if you are awaiting investigation or hospital review? Is that what they mean?

Was a letter sent to him/GP in June 24 outlining the diagnosis & plan?

If no letter sent then the 12 weeks starts from the date of the October appointment.

It's worth contacting them to see what they can offer. You may be able to still travel but with some exclusions on what you can claim for.

Have you been refused insurance or are they just saying they won't cover anything lymphoma related?

Go via a broker and find another company

Quick update - his actual medical diagnosis was 30th June (spoke to GP) but they didnt invite him via letter for a consultant's appointment until the beginning of August. The appointment itself wasnt until 1st Oct as it was deemed non urgent. Nothing in the letter to state what the diagnosis was. They just offered a non urgent appointment.

DH is on a watch and wait now after his appointment outlining what the issue was.

Had another call with the insurance yesterday and with this new information they have take the date of diagnosis as 30 June so well over the 12 weeks required for cover.

Thing is the question is DATE OF DIAGNOSIS on the insurance questionnaire - not DATE OF TELLING especially as there is no treatment required.

We are now covered. Hurrah and thanks all for responding.

In answer to a PP. It really isnt easy to get specialist insurance. He has other medical issues. This company are very well known for doing everything they can to get you cover. High excesses etc. Most of the other insurance companies use a certain software so if one says no then most of the others are going to say the same.

That's a relief & hope you have a lovely time away.
