Hi all,

So my son has just turned 2 a few weeks ago and unfortunately he does not speak yet and I’ve been worrying every day and night as I suffer from anxiety! A few months ago he used to say the number ‘4’ when prompted and ‘baby’ ‘mum’ ‘dada’. Not sure what happened the last 4 months but all he says is ‘eeeee’ and ‘yaay’ all the time. He has a 2 year HV coming up but I have already referred him to speech therapy as I hear the waiting list is 10 months.

It is also been 5 days since we removed his dummy cold Turkey and have reduced screen time which I believed affected his speech.

He is an only child and we do not have loads of other cousins or friends that he can play with. We are also worried about him jumping on the spot and flapping but he only does this when he’s excited or overwhelmed. Also humps the table or floor when he’s tired which can be embarrassing when we’re outside! I will be taking him to playgroups this week.

I’m obviously worried about him being on the spectrum, but he does play with me when we are doing flash cards, Lego etc. makes eye contact, smiles at me, laughs when playing peekaboo, hides from me when we are doing hide and seek etc. but he just doesn’t seem to understand instructions at all.

So just wanted to ask did anyone else’s little ones have the above behaviours (flapping, humping, jumping on spot, saying eeeee) which they eventually grew out of? And when did your children start speaking, specifically boys?

Get rid of screens entirely. He absolutely doesn’t need them at 2. Interact, interact and interact more. Daycare will help too.

my child does almost 80% the same thing and am extremely worried. What has helped you. She watched her iPad at such a young age from my grandma and then watched allot of TV with dad while I was at work.

I worked from 7am till 9pm day shift or night 8pm till 8am

the little time I have off am extremely exhausted

@TheSunnyGreyBee so since my last post in October, my son has been saying some words since end of January. He is just repeating words and phrases and songs but using words to communicate yet. I decreased tv, took his dummy out. And you just need to keep repeating and repeating questions and phrases and wait for them to finish it.. so I would say ‘what does a dinosaur say’? And pause and wait for him to say aaahhh. Then I would say what does a duck say etc.. he can now do most animal sounds, he can say the alphabet, numbers 1-10 and nursery rhymes.

i do feel your pain ahout working long hours, I also work full time and it’s very hard! But when you do get time even 15 minutes in the mornings or night, you just need to keep repeating the same sentences and wait for him to finish. And also get picture cards with words which I found helped. Good luck!

I’ve said this before on here, but my MiL once told me that eldest BiL barely uttered at all until he was 3. She’d been getting very worried but once he started it came out in whole sentences. He’d just been taking it all in and biding his time. I might add that he went on to win a scholarship to Cambridge.

My granddaughter was a similar age and it was mentioned, just between me and my Mum really (I'm the MIL!)... She'd start off knowing songs etc and making the right sounds. She has far too much screen time, but not my place to say.

Anyway she's 3 in May and she doesn't shut up now 😂 words are said clearly enough to understand and she's just come on leaps and bounds.

See what your health visitor says. It's so difficult with your first. Also there's a lot of competition going on... My baby can do... Blah blah blah. Block that out!
