Child toilet seat in a normal toilet seat

I'm about to have my bathroom redone and my child will soon be potty training. Ideally I don't want all the bits that go with that....potty, clunky seat in inserts etc. I've seen online you can buy toilet seats known as family seats, but as I'm buying a new toilet, I'd prefer to keep that seat and add a child seat to it. Has anyone does this? Is it a thing? Or something similar? I think I'm just done with emptying a potty!

What do you do when they no longer need it? Isn't it irritating for adults to use? We just used the loose one that you put on top when you needed it and then binned it when outgrown.

Edit - sorry, just noticed you're asking for something for your new toilet seat!

We had one of those family seats while our kids were little, it was very handy and not at all annoying, the little seat just fits inside the lid (or at least ours did) so it doesn't bother adults. It was much nicer and neater than having a loose one propped up in the loo for years!

(I think we Freecycled it when we didn't need it any more and treated ourselves to a new loo seat, but you could keep your old one)

I’m with you on the potty ick but get one of those all in one steps and seats combo- they’ll need a stool anyway so the inbuilt seat doesn’t spare you visible kiddy crap and it’s a v short lived phase so I wouldn’t do anything permanent.

Admodean · 07/10/2024 21:38

You get a loose seat that lies on the floor beside the toilet, and when it’s required you just pop it on top. I have a little step stool in my bathroom anyway so that’s fine for a child to use.

It’s very easy to change a toilet seat - literally two screws.

get your new toilet installed, remove the nice new seat and store it for a year. Buy a family loo seat and put it on your new toilet for now.

you will still need something for them to step on though, I don’t find the plain white ikea ones too much of an eyesore but you could use anything sturdy and wipe clean - it doesn’t have to have peppa pig on!

I think they are genius and would get the toilet seat with built in child seat.

I change out my toilet seats every few years anyway, so when they outgrow it, just get a new standard toilet seat,

They are so easy to replace. Anyone can do it.

We got the same seat. It's caught a few guest of guard.
I had one friend ask how do I use the toilet with such a small seat I nearly fell onto the floor laughing cause she had been using the kids seat on it for months.

We used a family toilet seat for years, it was brilliant. I was worried that a portable insert would fall in or twist off. With family seats the smaller seat is part of the lid so perfectly fine for adults to use the larger seat as normal. They're often lighter as well so no chance of pinched fingers.

😂😂 This is brilliant!

You say you're done with clunk but you'd probably still need a step or something for a young child to access the toilet. Personally we went for the combined step/seat and just taught the kid how to use it and put it away after.

We got a family seat when my youngest was toilet training and I really wish I'd got one for the oldest. Far easier to clean than a separate seat, for a start. Then the separate ones have a tendency to move slightly when they're in place which makes the child feel unsafe, and some designs pinch the back of the child's legs when they're sitting on it. Neither of those things help with toilet training at all! Plus the family seat was really easy for my little one to use on her own, when she needed help putting the separate seat in place, so it gave her more control over things which is a bonus when toilet training.

We got a nice white wooden one from Homebase, it looked as nice as any other decent solid toilet seat would have done and lasted for years. And the step stool she used has been used around the house for DIY/changing lightbulbs etc. ever since.

We bought this today and it seems really good, only eight pounds so much cheaper than the actual seats and easy to remove https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7917158

Not tested it properly yet, but seems good :)

Mummytodo · 07/10/2024 22:27

We use a family seat. It's fine no bother at all we had prior tried the insert, potty and a step with a seat. The family seat is the best and daughter didn't bother with potty

mitogoshigg · 07/10/2024 22:28

We had something like this

Those built in toilet seats often only work for bigger children. DS is 4 and often still falls through them. Imo it’s better just to get a seperate one.

LoftLaughLoads · 07/10/2024 22:36

Swapping a normal toilet seat for an adaptible family seat is a very easy task, you don't need an installer there's just two bolts you tighten by hand.

Buy the toilet you want for the long term including a normal seat. Pop the normal seat into a cupboard/loft/whatever and fit a family seat. You won't need it any more, sooner than you think, and can swap them back.
