Ear piercing not healing well, what am I doing wrong?

My DD had her ears pierced 6 weeks ago. They are not seeming to heal very well. Quite pussy and bleeding still. We have been cleaning them and did so very well for the first 4 weeks. We swopped from gold to silver about 2 weeks ago as the gold seemed to embed into her ear!

Any tips or is this quite usual?

Definitely get titanium as that is the best one if you have allergies

Christmastinsel78 · 07/10/2024 22:15

Leave them in don't keep fiddling with them. Cool boiled salted water to clean

Barrenfieldoffucks · 07/10/2024 22:16

Sounds like a lot of messing around with new piercings.

DD had hers pierced at a body piercing place, with a needle and titanium studs. Told not to touch unless spraying with saline and cleaned with a cotton buds, with clean fingers. To go back after 8 wks for a check, and change for shorter stud if needed. No infections etc.

I certainly wouldn't be messing with them, changing etc etc. Keep them clean, and give them a chance to heal.

Thanks for further messages. Where do I buy titanium earrings?

We experienced the same until we switched to titanium. That was a game changer

We had the same problem, my DS had his ear pierced and it just wouldnt heal. Took it out after 10 weeks for football but it was horrendous to put back in. We cleaned it with salt water etc but in the end it had constant pus and it went purple around it 😱 took him to the doctor who said just leave it out. Left it out and it's healed over fine but never again. I myself have over 15 piercings and never had a problem with 1!

There’s a subreddit just called Piercing - there’s loads is useful information there on taking care of them.

I would get a reputable piercer to put titanium studs in, I wouldn’t try and do it yourself. Then I’d leave them alone for 6 months.

There's loads that are quite cheap on Amazon. Just make sure you get some with a 0.8mm gauge so they'll fit ok.

Titanium or surgical steel earrings and sea salt soaks, will find the instructions for you. Plenty of places sell the earrings, stores and online. I bought my daughter studs from serenity jewellery online https://www.serenityjewellery.co.uk/collections/lobe

You should be using surgical steel, not gold or silver. Keep cleaning them with proper piercing spray. Unfortunately, unless you get them done properly, it’s very easy to get bad advice on aftercare.

Where ....? where do u get them done properly pls ?

Oooh I can still remember the pain of my ear piercings that I got done when I was 13. The actual piercing (gun, department store) wasn't too bad, but they were just so sore afterwards, never seemed to settle down so I went back to get them checked and I remember I nearly fainted with the pain. I just said "forget it, take them out" and I let them heal over. It wasn't worth it. But I still envy those who can wear nice earrings, so hope it heals.

This is great thanks! She does have eczema so I might try the titanium.

We did have a solution to use but it is finished now.

We. Haven't focused on keeping them dry.

Do you remove the earrings to clean at this stage or keep them in all the time?

Keep them in and try not to touch them. When you get fingers near your ears you’re increasing the risk of dirt etc our piercer said to keep them in for 12 weeks.
So the sprays mean you can spray a mist over and just leave them alone.
Some little bits of bleeding and white gunk can be normal but it’s hard to know if what you’re describing is a bit more.

Try a body piercing place, they will use a needle as against a gun.

@Barrenfieldoffucks in my experience it's very hard to find somewhere to pierce a child's ears with a needle. I called about 6 different tattoo/ piercing shops a few months ago and none would pierce ears for under 16 year olds. In the end I went to an established local jeweler that I have been to over the years for various things as they had a good rep for piercing. They had 2 piercing guns and 2 staff pierced both ears at the same time. Child felt nothing and I was very happy with their advice, service, aftercare and experience.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 09/10/2024 13:12

I agree. But, while it is controversial, my take is that if true professional piercers won't pierce a child then a child should not be getting pierced. I don't see the need...but that's just a personal opinion.

Our local place will pierce ears (first and second set) from 12. Other ear locations and nose from 16. Anything else from 18.

Agree with you there!! But when they see all their friends at school with their little earrings they just want to fit in. The risk is as low with the gun if the user is experienced and their reputation is proven in my opinion.

She needs implant grade titanium flat back labrets, ideally changed by a professional piercer (not Claire’s or the like)

If there is any sign of an infection go to the GP

She should only be cleaning them with Saline spray once a day (Neilmed) and warm water, no touching or twisting them.

Edited to add make sure they are properly dry after washing (no cotton buds/pads)
