I'm totally addicted to Diet Coke

I just don't know how to give it up. I've never had an addiction before really. It's so, so difficult because I crave it all the time. I've had 5 cans today and that's a good day.

I didn't mean to end up with this addiction. What was 1-2 cans a day has just escalated. Also I'm sure it's hampering my weight loss despite it being 0 calories (I'm obese too hooray).

I can't really give it up cold turkey because the headaches would be horrendous.

Does anyone have any tips? I'm thinking of switching to caffeine free to soften the blow...

Been there, used to drink at least 2l Pepsi Max a day but stopped a few years ago - then restarted cos I'm an idiot as I thought I could just have the occasional glass and learnt I couldn't. Stopped for good a couple of years ago and don't intend to go near the stuff again. Take painkillers for the first couple of days and drink a lot of water. If you drink other caffeinated drinks, have them on hand, otherwise you could try caffeine pills in decreasing doses. I found the most helpful thing was just always having a glass of water to hand and if I had a craving I'd drink that. After a week or so you'll not miss it - I promise you I never ever crave it now, and I had the habit for over 20 years! Makes me feel a bit sick to think of it really...

I did go cold turkey. Yes headaches but once you get through that you don't want it anymore. You can do it! Just make sure you avoid all caffeine from then on.

Diet Coke definitely doesn’t help with dieting. It’s better to drink the normal coke if any.
Just wean off it. Your teeth and inside will thank you.

BuggersMuddle · 07/10/2024 21:50

All I can say as someone who didn’t have particular issue (1can usually or 2 max, working days) is that once I was properly ‘off it’, it tasted absolute disgusting.

Nowadays if I want a coke I just have one. I doubt it’s once a week. Whereas the Diet Coke was very habit forming.

Mounjaro. Loads of people are finding it not only helps with food cravings but also these other addictions too. Have a look on the threads

Cold Turkey didn’t work for me with coke but cutting way down and down until it felt like a treat to be had at the weekends did. For the first while it was literally water/ miwadi/ an apple every time I wanted some, and I’d fail sometimes, but then think well at least I had less than I usually do! Then it was water/ tea/ an apple. Mine was full coke and I definitely got withdrawal symptoms- headaches and was so irritable

Switch the cans to bottles. I don’t know what it is about cans but I get addicted to them whereas I don’t with bottles. Recently had to do this with lemonade. Once you switch to bottles you’ll find it much, much easier to reduce then cut out.

I have no idea why I find cans of pop much more addictive than bottles as it should be exactly the same ingredients.

I had this issue... with cans of boost! I had one a day for 10 years then upped it to two a day for a good year, awful I know 😭
I've moved onto "Purdys", it's a fruit based sparkling drink with no caffeine or added sugar. It's not cheap but it definitely softens the blow.
A cheaper option would be a homemade smoothie... so boring compared though, I know I know. Good luck!

I was doing 3 cans a day and I cut it for 8 weeks fully .

I just decided enough was enough . Didn't have any headaches at all . Upped my water intake .

I just had to take the bull by the horns

I wanted to get in control of how much I was drinking and now I can go without it or have it if I Iike - max one a day but not even touching it most days now.

I went cold turkey, about a week of feeling rough but then have never had it again and no desire to have it either.

I’d be willing to try this but is it the case that one has to be overweight to get these type of medicines?
