Does anyone know about Universal Credit please?

This is the situation:

I'm on legacy benefits. ESA & PIP, alongside CTC & CB.

My partner is on UC, support group.

I have to claim UC (migrate over) by 14th Nov.

He is moving in with me but is currently still at his old address, which UC covers the rent for.

How do we go about moving in together and me migrating and joining our claims?

Should I apply for UC first and then once that's sorted inform them that he is moving in?

Like a few weeks after?

He has to give 1 months notice.

I was changed from TC to UC in August '23. It has been a very intrusive process and much less gentle than TCs. I would think very carefully about merging your households.

Claiming universal credit is like having major surgery without anaesthetic..

UC has a bad rep but I much prefer it. It is far simpler than tax credits and no chance of overpayments like I always had with tax credits.

I do not claim any disability related benefits though so I'm not sure if it's less straightforward there.

Honestly though I'd be reluctant about moving in and merging your claims. Would you still get the child element with a partner? Is he unable to work?

I've just had to change from tc to uc it was hard work they messed up the first months payment as oh is on pip and esa, I have a protected payment of 400 a month which we will lose if there's a change in circumstances.
You could lose this protection when you merge households. Waiting for the 2nd payment in a week and worried sick

Get your own sorted first and then see how it goes.

I would not move in together. UC is a pain tbh. I'll be £50 a month worse off once my transitional protection ends next year.

We've been together 23 years but split amicably 4 years ago.
We've been back together a year and want to move back in together. We have kids together.

I don't have any choice but to claim. I've got a migration letter

Yes you can still get the child element

They're his children.

You will have to declare that he is moving in with you. You will get less as a couple.. but that is how it works sadly.

Miley1967 · 07/10/2024 22:01

If you are both in ESA support group then when you join the claim only one can get the LCWRA element and the other can claim carers element if the other person on PIP. Start your claim then just add him on the day he moves in. The money you get for that month will depend on circumstances on the last day of your assessment period then UC payday is seven days later.

Somebody else already claims carers for me, but I know we can both get LCWRA but only 1 payment.
