Worried about my little one's milestones

At what age should a child be able to complete this puzzle?

Anything really from 15 months to 2.5yrs.

Children not only need hand eye coordination they also need to be able to match, have fine motor skills and also be able to sit and concentrate.

These skills develop over a huge age period and not many children will have them all at the younger end of the spectrum. Not all children will do it at 2.5yrs because they don't like to sit and do fine motor activities.

These children often have amazing gross motor skills though!

Depends on the child. DS was doing these puzzles from 8 mths. But the nursery did ‘train’ them to do this in the baby room as was it was easier than having to deal with 10 crawling babies.

Lumberingfool · 07/10/2024 16:23

Most 8 months olds could not do this type of puzzle.

18 months - 3 is much more realistic.

Mine really struggled with these types of puzzles. They all have very poor fine motor skills. They’re adults now, still clumsy as hell and can’t thread a needle (same as me!) but got good jobs, learned to drive, bought houses etc. Don’t worry about it!

How old is your Dc? The age children can do this type of task varies quite a bit, my eldest could do them really early from around 8mths but in isolation its not an indicator of a problem or intelligence level and at his 2yr review the HV asked if he had started doing this sort of puzzle yet and was so skeptical when I said he'd been doing them for around a year that she got one out for him to do! I think 2 to 3 is about right for things like this, threading beads and the like. Do you have any other concerns?

Thank you for your reply. He is 2 1/2.

He doesn't speak yet and isn't very attentive either. He doesn't know who mama and dada are. He is very active though.

He has had his 2 year review and virtually none of his milestones have been met.

What did the HV say?

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/10/2024 17:16

I think you need to see the HV in person, not virtually. The puzzle alone wouldn’t have worried me because 1 of my DC just hates puzzles and wouldn’t have complied with the request to do it unless bribed, whilst the other adores puzzles and was easily doing 10-20 piece ones by 2.5. They all differ and a lot of it at this age is compliance! The not talking or knowing who his parents are the areas I would be most concerned about.

Wiaa · 07/10/2024 17:26

What is the HV suggesting to support you , did they offer any followup/signpost you to other services?

That there might be something going on.
He has been referred to speech therapy but told an autism assessment would take up to three years.

He has been referred to speech therapy and the GP. I have had to move in the meantime sadly so it's now going to take longer. Confused as to why he was referred to GP though

It's very good he's been referred.

I would ask for a referral to a paediatrician asap. This is done via the GP, so its good hes been referred there too.
