DD wants a claw machine toy for her birthday... They're going to be utter shite, aren't they?

DD(5) has two things on her birthday list. One of which is a claw machine. Something like this.

Ark miido Claw Machine for Kids, Candy Machine Grabber Arcade Game Toys, Mini Vending Machine Dispenser Machine With Music & 10 Dolls and 10 Eggs, Indoor Educational Toy for Girls Gift https://amzn.eu/d/cvUQHSx

Is there any way that these things aren't going to be just complete shit that won't work / will break in three days?

Does anyone's kids have one / something similar?

If a child has set their heart on something, TBH I’d get it, even if you think it’s going to be shite.

From long experience, a lot of children love shite! Personally I don’t much care if they get bored with it after a week - I like to see their eyes light up when they open a present, not disappointment because it’s something else.

@CaptainCarrotsBigSword

We bought the mojmoj claw machine a few years ago, and it’s still going! My DD got frustrated with it at first, but now she’s older (teen) we use it a lot for parties. You can fill the eggs with treats. It works at just the right level : not too easy/not too hard.

I can only see it online as second hand expensive now!

Sorry for hijack my sons just put one on his Christmas list! I like the look of this one. How did you find the grabber? Most reviews off all the machines seem to say the grabbers aren’t strong enough to pick anything up. Is there anything you found it picked up easier?

We put a load of individually wrapped sweets in there. Sort of quality street sized sweets. Has always been fine!

I think that's the one my son's friend has which is really good.

DD begged for a claw machine two years ago for Christmas so.we bought the second one you posted a photo of from FB Marketplace as we had a similar feeling about it as you. Annoyingly it broke within a few weeks and Santas elves had to replace it with a brand new one, costing us double! DD loved it though, we have those plastic Easter eggs and occasionally secretly fill them with sweets as a surprise.

The novelty wears off quite quickly and it sits for months unused, but then she brings it out again and will play a lot with it.

Definitely just buy it for your DD, the memory of DD face and jumping up and down with wild joy when she received hers is etched in my mind forever

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 07/10/2024 11:43

Ordered it this morning and it's already dispatched so I'll have time to buy some crap to go in it as well.

I was more concerned about it breaking / not working in the first place and being a disappointment to her for that reason, so I'm reassured a few people on here have said that they've had one that has worked ok.

Children are very fickle. If you avoided buying toys in case they got bored of them after a day, you'd likely be getting them nothing for Christmas or birthdays.
I'd definitely get her the claw machine Smile

Mangojuice81 · 07/10/2024 14:52

If that is what she wants I wouldn’t worry and just give it to her; most toys are forgotten about but it will show you listened to her. She is only 5

Dayfurrrrit · 07/10/2024 15:02

I’m getting one for my turning 4 yr old and putting cheap unicorn necklaces in some of the plastic eggs. I absolutely hate plastic crap but I know she is going to be utterly overjoyed with this so I’m biting the bullet! And getting some lovely books/stem toys to compensate!

Himawarigirl · 07/10/2024 15:03

I'd look for a second hand one. I generally do for my kids stuff anyway, but for something like this that you're not convinced of you can get it cheaper and avoid another one going to landfill. And if there are second hand ones for sale that at least suggests they have some durability.

SnowJamz · 07/10/2024 17:09

We got one from Flying Tiger last year, it’s been used loads and works well. They sold little soft toys to go in it.

Chaiilatte · 07/10/2024 19:18

My ds has one of these and really likes it. The music is annoying but it keeps him busy.

itsmabeline · 07/10/2024 19:31

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 07/10/2024 06:55

Right I've ordered that one from eBay. Thanks all.

Mr Frosty esque trauma averted!

I'm sure she'll love it!

HedgehogB · 08/10/2024 00:16

We had one for Christmas last year and it was a hit. It was from Tesco I think. We filled it with Quality street and it got us through three or four family events? Such a laugh

Ineedaholidayagain · 08/10/2024 15:55

I'm so cross with myself, the typo one that was reduced yesterday is full price today. Which ones don't play music please?

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 19/10/2024 08:12

UPDATE it was DD's birthday yesterday, she was so excited when she unwrapped the claw machine!

We filled it with a mixture of sweets and celebrations chocolates, she and her sister have managed to get a couple of things out between them, after a lot of attempts! Seems to be working well enough and the one I bought has quiet (ish) music, loud music or no music as options so that's a relief 😂.

Thanks for talking me into getting it, she's chuffed to bits.

The eBay link no longer works because you've bought it - can you post the brand/photo? Thank you! My guys will LOVE something like this for Christmas.

watchuswreckthemic · 19/10/2024 08:22

Hi can I ask which one people purchased? Seen a few links but not sure which ones were good- the eBay ones? Thanks

Personally I wouldn't worry about that. If she has her heart set on it and isn't budging, then I would get it for her and she'll find out for herself and move on (she'll move on and be happy again faster than you think). If money is an issue and it's not budget friendly. Then maybe you could take her out for her birthday instead, give her an extra few goes on the claw machine at a local play place or shopping centre and organising something else fun for the day too. It's an idea
