Dd is in year 10. So in guessing there will be work experience soon. Dd is obsessed with aeroplanes. Do you think we could find a way of her doing some sort of work experience that involves aeroplanes/airport. I did Google work experience at an air port but can't find anything/she's to young . I only looked very briefly . We are in London area .

Maybe a travel agent? Or check the Air Force I think sometimes the cadet program has work experience.

Maybe try ringing a few of the small private airfields around London?

titchy · 06/10/2024 11:44

Don't assume she'll do work experience - quite a lot of schools don't.

How about somewhere like the RAF museum in Hendon?

Presumably for its members.

BA used to have a fabulous work experience programme but not sure if it started again post Covid (I left last year so it might well have come back)

There apprenticeships are great too when the time comes!

notimagain · 06/10/2024 12:08

Seconding what @JollyHostess101 has posted, not sure of it’s current status:

https://careers.ba.com/work-experience

Just be aware that these days doing anything airside at an airport can involve a lot of jumping through hoops to gain an airside security pass, so some employers may well baulk at arranging the admin needed to facilitate that if it’s a short term placement..working landside in company offices etc might be easier to arrange.

Edit to add: Good luck OP, hope your DD finds something.

JollyHostess101 · 06/10/2024 12:11

One of my ex colleagues was the facilitator for work experience pre covid and it was just landside only and they weren't left alone but they all seemed to love it!

She left during lockdown unfortunately but I'll ask my ex colleagues if they know if it's back!!

Depends on the side of London, but I know of kids who have gone on from work experience here/with companies based here to then get apprenticeships in aviation.

I just looked at that. I saw the work experience bit of it but it seems they have Already done it this year. Which seems odd

Is she in cadets? If not can she join it will be good for her anyway even if not interested in the RAF? I did work experience on an RAF base but that was 20+ years ago.

DD is doing hers at a nuclear power station, she wrote a nice email and thought she'd just be in the visitors centre if they offered anything as all the work experience online suggested the WE program was for college and uni students but she's going to be attached to the maintenance crew instead and get to see the operational side instead.

SheilaFentiman · 06/10/2024 12:31

IME arranging work experience for an under 16 year old is mostly about who you know, because it’s a pain for the company (insurance, monitoring etc) - so she might be better helping in a friend’s shop or something.

Virtual work experience programmes are available eg Springpod

She does not like clubs /cadets etc so she won't do that. She enjoys her alone /chill time to much.

Hope your dd enjoys her work experience

Ds did Bae but that was in the holidays and the submarine core. He loved it, but did say he'd have preferred planes.

That was last Academic Year, though.

Somebody at your DD's school is responsible for careers and ensuring the school meets Gatsby benchmarking. If she's proactive and says this is what she's interested in, then there may be contacts on record for previous years' students taking part. And you can contact the companies and BHA direct and they may give details of planned things this year.
