Surprised at lack of mainstream media coverage of Helene

Is anyone else surprised by the lack of media coverage following the hurricane in America a week ago?
The images coming out of western North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Florida are really shocking.
Multiple towns destroyed. Roads washed away. Power lines down. Trees and debris everywhere.
Over 200 people are known to have died. 1400 more are still listed as missing.

But barely any mention on the news? Or am I just missing it?

Same with the flooding in Nepal. Mentioned once and then barely anything since.

It’s terrifying they’re going to be hit by a cat 5 hurricane. Storm surges over 15 foot. I’ve seen the devastation first hand of these and it’s so scary. Water so high it covers buildings and people have drowned in their homes. I hope everyone evacuates on time.

YourTruthorMine · 07/10/2024 21:52

I am really shocked by the lack of media coverage, considering Katrina and Maui were front page news. I am convinced there is some kind of cover up

Chewbecca · 07/10/2024 21:54

The Americans I know don't give a hoot about climate change. They used so much plastic including disposable plates and cutlery, drive huge cars everywhere, run AC constantly, just live a completely different lifestyle from us. I don't think they would accept any connection. They truly think we are mad to use the train, walk & cycle anywhere and run a tiny economical car and have no Aircon and create a tiny amount of rubbish. (Sweeping I know but very true based on our experiences with family in Florida and their friends).

I've seen quite a lot on Helene and have been following Milton's progress, I assume my phone has worked out that I am interested in southern US stuff because it does show me plenty of it.

Candyfluffs · 07/10/2024 21:57

The problem is you need air con and to drive everywhere out there because it’s so hot. It’s basically a big swamp and makes no sense that people live there. It’s a hostile environment and takes a lot of energy to sustain life there. Sad.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2024 21:59

They had 'more important' things to squawk about - Keir Starmer's glasses and then Sue Gray, mostly.

True!

Never heard of the hurricane and don't read twitter so would have no clue unless this thread had been posted

Sounds terrible Easter Sad

More and more heartbreaking footage coming out. Just saw a woman being interviewed who says you can smell the dead bodies decaying now. Some half buried in the mud, some up in the trees.

I think that was the video I saw too. Its unimaginable.

I dread to think how much worse it's going to be come Thursday/ Friday. this could quite possibly end hp being one of the deadliest hurricane seasons on record. pretty much all of florida need to evacuate. But north if florida there is over 1.2 million people still without power. Huge areas devastated by Helene. where do you go?

There's so much rubbish being said on line that this storm was deliberately engineered to be this horrendous. That 'they' (although not too clear who they are) rain seeded the storm. No recognition that global warming is responsible. Instead they are being screwed over by 'they'!

There's none so blind as those who will not see I guess.

Floridian here. Not all of Florida needs to evacuate, only barrier islands and coastal areas subject to storm surge. Maps of evacuation areas are readily available online.
I'm in the "cone of death" on the east side of Florida in a poured concrete house with impact windows outside of an evacuation zone. The next few days will be rowdy, but my neighbors and I will be fine, and power will be back on within a couple of days. Florida knows how to do this. Western NC and eastern TN don't. It will be years before they fully recover.

LifeExperience · 07/10/2024 23:20

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, Hurricane Milton is headed straight for Tampa as I type.

These things happen all over the world and barely get a mention. The US gets far more coverage than any other country.

I've just come looking to see if the storms in America are on here, as I'd not heard until I listened to Jen, a YouTuber, earlier today who was evacuated and in bits.

Spanglybangles · 07/10/2024 23:52

I have a family member from Texas who recently started college in Tampa. They are flying home to Texas for the second time in around a fortnight to escape a hurricane. It’s just awful. I really feel for those who don’t have that kind of option.

RubyRooRed · 08/10/2024 00:03

I’ve been watching a lot of you tube videos lately on the aftermath of Hurricane Helene ( I follow a lot of farmers and homesteaders who have been caught up in it , I wasn’t specifically looking for hurricane info) . They have been absolutely decimated some people have lost everything , live stock , buildings , roads completely gone, hospitals can’t function.
I haven’t seen a single thing on the news and as I said only knew about it due to being subscribed to these homesteaders anyway .
I have just seen the warning for the Cat 5 hurricane due to hit on Wednesday and they are saying it could be the biggest storm ever.
I truly think the lack of reporting is due to the fact this is happening due to climate change .
It’s really strange.
I hope the people in Florida get through this , it must be so scary trying to evacuate with young families etc.

WhichEllie · 08/10/2024 00:11

Here are a few pictures from North Carolina, which has some of the worst-affected areas. It is unbelievable how powerful the floods were. Cars and trees just shredded, roads and bridges torn apart like nothing.

And yet on TikTok there are videos of Americans strapping what little they have left onto their backs and trekking all day through the mountains to reach help and evacuation points. Private helicopters with citizen pilots landing in precarious places to reach stranded people. Strings of pack mules carrying supplies through rugged terrain. People using TikTok and Starlink to transmit lists of people that are missing and found. Their resilience and resourcefulness are remarkable.

Totally agree. I heard a tiny bit of coverage on LBC, something about how tricky the terrain was in North Carolina for the rescue operation. But otherwise it's all been Tiktok.

The lack of practical help from the government is horrifying. Harris is more focused on appearing on podcasts and interviews for the election and Biden is MIA too.
The next hurricane about to hit is also a worry.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2024 00:25

Maybe since so much is going on?
I'm in Canada and tend to check 5 tv news channels: CNN and a local Los Angelas station and our 3 national channels. Another hurricane is expected to hit FL by Wed and currently at a 1, but expected to reach a 3. Tornadoes also possible.

That is irresponsible nonsense (I’m in the US). That sort of disinformation is stopping people accessing help who need it. Educate yourself.

Yes! I'm always shocked by the US attitudes to climate. I once was speaking to a man from California who said that he loved to turn his aircon right up, get his house all cold (despite it being hot outside), so he could then light his gas fire and candles and "feel all cosy".
Don't worry mate, you'll feel costy when the planet burns.

greenrollneck · 08/10/2024 02:18

I've been away for a week in Europe, I watch some TV and talk with friends and US colleagues regularly but had to look up what your post was referring to. So based on my UK life, I've not seen or heard a thing mentioned.
