What cars are big SUVs?

But still 5 seaters?

I have 2 DC, 7 and 2. Won't be having more. There really is no room in our current car.

Currently driving a Peugeot 3008 SUV but it's just so small!

Can anyone recommend something very spacious whilst still remaining a 5 seater? Don't fancy having to get a 7 seater because a lot of the time, the extra 2 seats are tiny and I just want a flat and simple boot space

If I needed it: Volvo XC90.

I don't think the 3008 was classed as an SUV though, I thought it was a crossover? I agree with @Poggishairtufts many estates have a bigger boot space eg the Skoda Octavia estate has a bigger boot that the 3008.

Also think about rear seats as it depends on the model: eg we found the Mk4 Ford Focus had more space in the rear seats than the XC40 and Karoq (we weren't looking for a large SUV so appreciate these won't be on your list).

What really intrigues me, genuinely, is how you need a bigger boot for 2 children. We have a hatchback with 2 under 3 (so need to take a buggy most of the time) and I can't imagine needing anything bigger. We even went car camping with a massive 6 man tent and all the other paraphernalia needed for that. Obviously respect your preference for an SUV btw, I just find it really interesting and wonder what I'm not packing for my children when we go on holiday!

I really do like the look of the Volvo, they seem trustworthy

I like Land Rover types but see a lot said about them being in a garage more than out on the road!

I have a Discovery Sport which is a proper 5 seater (I think you can get it with 7 but didn’t go for that option for the reasons you state) and I do have have a bit of a love hate relationship with it but I’ve had it from new, it’s now 4 years old and it’s never had a mechanical issue or anything so I’d class it as pretty reliable.

Porridgeislife · 06/10/2024 07:27

Skoda Enyaq or Kia Sportage would be my starting point.

JLR cars are statistically unreliable - the last model Range Rover is apparently the most unreliable make in the UK based on average cost of warranty repair claims & the Discovery is not far behind. Plus you’ve got the problem that JLR can’t make a car that locks adequately enough to deter thieves.

I've always found estate cars to be far better in terms of boot space than SUVs. Have a test drive of a couple and see how you find them.

TubeScreamer · 06/10/2024 08:06

An estate will give you much more boot space.

kitchenhelprequired · 06/10/2024 08:18

Where in the car do you want more space? XC60 has more boot space than a BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC for example. Parking and narrow roads are something to think about when you start looking at bigger SUV's and insurance is a must to look into.

I took a Ford Kuga for a test drive yesterday. I quite liked it and it felt a lot bigger than the Peugeot 3008. Good cabin space and a decent boot. Easy to get in and out of and I did a couple of manoeuvres and found it responsive.

Absolutely recommend the Skoda Kadiq.

We have the Kamiq (just adult ds and I) and it's really spacious and my dads looking at the Kadiq.

They are lovely SUVs and we'd go for the bigger one if we could (ds mobility car and he can't drive a large suv until he's 25!)

towelsand · 06/10/2024 09:15

We had a Å koda kodiaq. It was absolutely fab, best car ever. (2 adults, 2 pre teens and 2 dogs)

Honestly, most cars are so small nowadays but huge on the outside. I have a 330e tourer but you struggle to for 3 suitcases in the boot. I used to have a 98 3 series and a 2005 and both were bigger inside but a smaller outline.

I like the look of the Kia sorento. Cars ive driven and was pleasantly surprised at size are a Ford edge (and really enjoyed that.) Volvo xc90, vw Toureag and Lexus RX450.

Also auto trader gives you the dimensions of the boot/back seat etc etc. very helpful.

Weegieunicorn · 06/10/2024 09:33

Honda crv is excellent. Reliable and spacious.

I've seen this spoken about loads! Seems they're really wide and spacious

I can't believe the Peugeot 3008 is even considered an SUV! It's tiny.

It’s huge compared to a Suzuki Jimny.

Ilovemyshed · 06/10/2024 09:40

Ford Kuga. Decent spec, good size boot, higher driving position. Rear seat split 60:40 so you still have a four seater with part of the seats folded, otherwise a full 5 seater. Cheap to run and service.

This. I'm not sure what takes the room up in an SUV but we use a lot of hire cars at work.

Sometimes we ask for a big car which is inevitably a smaller SUV and they're a bit hopeless for carrying any sort of equipment compared with the estate pool cars we have.

What about something like a Skoda Octavia or Superb estate?

Another who supports this. The E Class estate is massive, slightly bigger than my previous 5 series, though that benefitted from a split opening tailgate which meant you could ram even more stuff in the boot.

Skoda Superb and Audi A6 are similar size range as well, but not tried them, friend has a Mondeo estate and that has a pretty big boot.

FlyingontheGround · 06/10/2024 09:44

The Skoda Kodiaq is a lovely car, loads of space and nice to drive. It’s been my second favourite car after VW Tiguan, they have quite a bit of space too.

Gr8bolsoffyre · 06/10/2024 09:48

If you want a big boot then an estate is a much better choice than an SUV. I mean, not as aesthetically pleasing I guess but you don’t say why you need an SUV. They’re not necessary for nearly all driving terrain in the UK.

Skoda Octavia or Superb are fabulous cars with boots you can lie down in.

Pyroleus · 06/10/2024 09:54

Echo previous posters - estates in general have MUCH more interior space than SUVs.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 06/10/2024 09:54

On holidays we've hired a vauxhall/opal crossland which been great, fit 2 adults and a child on a booster seat in the back

45fatandtired · 06/10/2024 10:56

I've got a Kia Sportage ( petrol ) , about 3 years old, cost me 20k , so definitely comes under budget, although not sure of today's price .
I love it & would happily buy same car again ,7 year warranty too. Believe the Hyundai Tucson is basically the same model
