SAHM for 10 years, do I put on CV?

I am applying for a job and need to list all
my current and previous paid end unpaid employment. Wondering whether to put stay at home parent as a role and detail responsibilities etc or should I leave off and put it as a 'gap in employment'.

put stay at home mum as the role but don’t give any further detail (people know what it covers). I wouldn’t put gap in employment personally but again you could and then just verbally say SAHP in person

Have you done any volunteering while a SAHM?

I went back to work in 2021 after 17y as a SAHM. But my 'career history' was unbroken and infact had lots of overlap. I didn't put down SAHM, but I did add Girlguiding, school governor, running a toddler group, reading volunteer at primary school, town Councillor, swimming club volunteering...

Are you currently a SAHM if so Just put SAHM but absolutely don’t add in any “responsibilities”

If not don’t add it in. I only put my jobs from the last 8 years on my CV. I was a SAHM mum for ten years prior but don’t add it on or any jobs before that as none of them are relevant to current career

'Career break for caring responsibilities.'

Don't list responsibilities.

I absolutely wouldn't list the jobs you did. What Meowcat said sounds matter of fact and to the point. I would put that.

Just put career break, don’t put responsibilities as they’ll just be responsibilities all parents have and you’ll probably just receive an eye roll.

MissTrip82 · 05/10/2024 23:38

I think most people just put 20017-2024 home duties or caring responsibilities.

Certainly not a list of duties.

I'd put caring responsibilities but I'd also list any volunteer work you did during that time. PTA? Leading Scouts? Refereeing sports teams? Community groups you contributed to with your time? I've found employers seem to like those.

Yes I volunteer in a school. Good thinking.

I put “career break for looking after children and elderly parents”. Then I listed stuff I did on the side - took up playing the violin, volunteered on the PTA committee, drew sketches and exhibited in a local gallery, wrote poetry and self published a little book, did some voluntary tutoring (because I used to be a teacher). Every employer who interviewed me said “that doesn’t sound like much of a break?” 😂
