Give me a kick up the arse

I'm feeling sad and low. There are reasons but I could also do more to help myself and these things would be:
Get dressed
Change my bed sheets (or even make the bed)
Wash my face
Exercise
Do the next step of a work aasignment that is hanging over me.

Can someone kick me up the arse please or give gentle encouragement? This is MN so I'm anticipating the former 😉

Right. Trainers, top and leggings on. Off out for a 20 min brisk walk smiling and saying hello to everyone you pass. Home for a shower and make your bed.
Enjoy it? Vow to do it tomorrow night after working on your assignment.

Just start something and tell yourself you'll only do it for 5 minutes. Then decide after 5 mins if you want to continue

Break the tasks down into tiny chunks so they don't feel quite so big. Write them all down so you get the satisfaction of ticking them off

Set a timer for 30 mins and see what you can get done in that time. Then grab a cuppa. And repeat.

Eat the frog! Do the thing that you're most dreading first. The others will feel so much easier

Finally go easy on yourself. Do the sheets really need changing? What's the minimum you could do? Get some fresh air if possible too. Really boosts the spirits. I've been feeling the same. Tough few days with a cold and then my son breaking his leg. Getting out for two walks today with my dog really helped.

Good luck!

Dear OP you’ve asked for suppprt so
let’s offer some.
We have all been there - greasy hair, furry teeth, sheets that pong a bit, lying there wondering what the bloody point is to anything.
Pick one thing and start there - brush your teeth.
Then find a song you really, really love and bugger general tasks just get up and move a bit. Not an aerobics display just get your arms and legs moving.
Changing the bed - does anyone like this? For a task like that I plan a treat at the end of it.
I stick my iPad on and have an easy show on with an episode I’ve seen before and love - nice but of Gilmore Girls never fails.
Then a nice warmth bath - the big reward. If I’m short on treats I wash my face and bob a bit of moisturiser on like mask and let it sink in. Stick my iPad on the loo (closed) and watch another episode to keep me company.
And I learned that whole routine in CBT trauma therapy.
It is called my ‘toolbox’ and it comes in handy. Tunes that relate to good memories. Shows that are like a warm hug.
It has helped me so much OP. Don’t lose heart.

I was like this yesterday, but add a massive hangover too. Eventually got out of bed at 3pm cleaned teeth, at 4pm I showered and got dressed ordered a takeout and went back to bed at 6pm. Slept through to 8.30am. we all deserve duvet day once in a while.

Had some food. Hair tidied. Dressed. Glittery, shiny cheese, aka Strictly, on tv.

Face wash after Strictly. Will force myself to do some simple calisthetics. Maybe wrap up a present I got a friend. Might do 20-30 min on assignment as, in my head, it'll feel like a start and give me a boost tomorrow.

Then going to write down I've all done.

Might pop back later and reread the posts as you've all been so encouraging and helpful. Thank you everybody.

That's such a lovely post. I hope you are doing well.

Can I jump on your thread too OP? I have some very stressful legal stuff that I have to deal with and am living in ostrich land. It will all be over soon but not unless I take action. Its not many steps but I just need to do them.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 05/10/2024 19:47

Well done OP! I chunk stuff. I watch a programme which has adverts and at each ad break, I get up and do something. Put water in the sink and soak dishes. Next ad break, wash dishes. Etc.

@LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand that's exactly how I roll!

sallydoodlecat · 06/10/2024 12:09

I read this just now on FB and really liked it and thought of you OP.

Push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable. lie in your garden, feel the sunshine on your skin.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. wash, then hang them in the sunshine with care. make your bed in full.

dig your fingers into the earth, plant a seed. see your success as it grows everyday.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle. breathe. practice your deep breathing. ground yourself.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. help an animal. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes.

take small steps to make it happen for you...”
