Am I snobby or jealous?

Please can I have your opinion on something I’ve been pondering? It seems to me that often on MN when people disagree on matters of taste, posters often say “typical MN snobbery” if the item you don’t like is seen as affordable to most or “you’re just envious/jealous” if it’s expensive.

I see it on a lot of threads about home decor, cars or education. Why can’t we just dislike something without any ulterior motive?

I don’t like RR Evoques nor can I afford to splash £40k on a new one, but I don’t dislike them because of their price, it’s because of their style. I like plenty of other expensive cars! I wouldn’t send my children to private school even if I could afford it, but I don’t think I am envious of those who can and do.

I don’t like those massive bows people have started putting on their front doors at Christmas. I could afford that, so does that make me a massive snob?

Is it possible to just dislike things regardless of their cost or am I in denial about my envy and snobbery?!

Ofc it’s possible to dislike things regardless of their cost!

If I like or dislike something money won’t come into it!!!

Normally it happens when it's "trendy" to dislike something. It doesn't help when the reason for disliking it is that it's low class, tacky, chavvy etc. From names, to grey walls , to Uggs.

Occasionally it is jealousy for expensive things, not always. A few borderline cases.

Get out your head, get off MN and get out the door! Go do something. You are way overthinking this. There's still a bit of daylight left.

Grey walls or indeed grey anything and everything was never a goer with me, whoever was doing it. We don't live in the south of France, we're in Britain and grey simply will not work however many people insist on having it. Grey outside, grey inside - was always a shit idea nothing to do with class, everything to do with not understanding how colour works.

@NowImNotDoingIt don't be coming after my Uggs!

@pictoosh grey doesn't work here (SoF) either, mainly cream, pink and earthy hues.

@NowImNotDoingIt You’re probably right, it’s always class isn’t it! I know what you mean that some things are “trendy” to dislike, but I guess we are social animals. I hate grey walls, but I do own some crushed velvet so who knows what that makes me 😅

Good point OP.

Bit like, you can't just dislike Meghan Markle, you must be a raging racist 🙄

Don’t worry, I’ve been out I promise! I’m just back from a long dog walk and always end up thinking about really random stuff to myself, today’s topic: MN! The dog didn’t have any opinions so I thought I’d ask here 😀

@pictoosh Agreed, I don’t want to coordinate my walls with my drizzly overcast sky 🤪

I’d say I could feel envious when it’s something concrete that I wish I had, like threads talking about utility rooms 😅 I would generally stay away from discussions of things I want but can’t afford though.

I think mostly saying someone’s jealous is a really immature insult, it’s very playground-esque, you’re right OP it’s perfectly normal to just not like stuff, it’s fine.

Sonolanona · 05/10/2024 19:52

Well I don't like big door bows...or autumnal wreaths or any of that stuff...I could afford it, I just think it's pointless. I don't want a RangeRover either (can't afford that!) because I already drive a knackered elderly mud covered Freelander because it fits dogs, grandkids and a heft number of compost bags in it. Definitely not a status car Grin
I am however envious of people who can send their children to independent schools... I would love to be able to send my grandchildren. Not because I'm a snob but because I work in a school and know how desperately underfunded and staffed we are!
