Flu jab for 1 year old

My son is 14 months old and has been offered the flu jab. I’m undecided (although support all the childhood vaccines which he is up to date with).
Has anyone given their child the flu vaccine under 2 years?

A healthy 18 month old in my baby group ended up in ICU with sepsis from flu. She survived and is healthy now but she wasn't expected to make it at one point. Presumably he's been offered the vaccine for a reason, so I would take it. Flowers

Presumably he has a condition which puts him in the position to be offered it, so yes I’d take it. He will be offered the spray/jab every year after 2 anyway

It's not a jab, it's a spray up the nose.

Not at 14 months

I’ve had flu twice as a healthy adult and have felt like I was dying both times. The symptoms lasted three weeks!

A baby doesn’t have the same fully-developed immune system so they are much higher risk of developing complications and becoming very poorly. Please consider the vaccine!

That's not the standard age for a flu vaccine, so I assume he is particularly vulnerable in some way? I would take it if offered.

PoppyFleur · 05/10/2024 08:37

I do understand your reservations, I too wavered despite logically weighing things up. Toddlers have a habit of putting everything in their mouth, which partly builds their immunity but also makes them susceptible to picking up bugs. If your child has a condition that makes him more vulnerable I would have the vaccine.

Assuming he has an underlying condition which makes him qualify for the flu vaccine at this age he would need 2 jabs 4 weeks apart. The nasal spray is from age 2. If he has no health problems check with GP practice that he hasn’t been called in error.

Ds had underlying issues so he had one at 6 months (minimum age, we counted down the weeks) and 18 months and then every year since.
Twins then had their first ones at just under one and every year. Now they're four it's nasal at school

Thanks everyone for your replies! I received a text message from my surgery about 2 hours before it was scheduled to say it was an incorrect text inviting him in and he was not due the flu spray due to age eligibility! He didn’t haven’t any underlying health issues which would warrant under 2, and I think this was why I was confused and didn’t feel happy about it.
I agree and will be accepting the vaccine for him when he is old enough and eligible.
Thank you!
