Why would he apply for child’s Passport

Hi,
Got out of a controlling relationship 5 years ago.
Daughter has a school trip coming up in May 2025.
Custody Is 50/50.
I really can’t afford the trip but said I’d sort out and pay for passport since I hold the original birth certificates.
He's told her he’d pay for trip (although she knows it’s his parents that will be paying as he won’t spend any money unless he has too).
Daughter is now saying that he is applying for passport but has been told not to tell me.
Daughter is concerned as she doesn’t see why he’s spend money and effort doing so unless he has something to gain from it.
What can he gain from this?
Can he apply without the original birth certificate?

Could it be a foreign passport? Is he Irish or have any other nationality?

FlippityFloppityFlump · 05/10/2024 08:17

Control is what he gains

VanWeezer · 05/10/2024 08:19

He can apply if he has a birth certificate. It's doesn't have to be the original. If he has parental responsibility he can apply for a passport without your permission unless a court order is in place.

This means you couldn't then apply for a passport if the original passport is valid. This is probably why he wants to do it.

Does he have roots/connections overseas and the worst case scenario is he could try and take DD there?

Or less sinister, he sees an opportunity to be Disney Dad (or continue with control) and swoop in paying for the school trip, being uncharacteristically organised and also sorting the required passport?

DustyLee123 · 05/10/2024 08:19

Could he have applied for a birth certificate?

ZaraSpellman · 05/10/2024 08:20

is it a British passport could he be applying for a different one for her? Colleague found out her ex had a us passport for their child.

BlouseyBrownMalone · 05/10/2024 08:25

I would guess he's not going to pay for the trip and this is the start of controlling that. Either he has the passport or there won't be a passport at all.

Anyone can apply for the birth certificate of anybody at all. (I could apply for your DD's birth certificate) and there can be more than one certificate that's valid or being used.

Have you spoken to the school about a possible bursary for the trip?

BlouseyBrownMalone · 05/10/2024 08:26

I would proceed as planned and apply for the passport and start saving for the trip.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 05/10/2024 08:26

I’d apply for her passport ASAP. You don’t want him controlling it.

Mindymomo · 05/10/2024 08:30

I would apply for passport yourself asap, he can get hold of a replacement Birth Certificate to apply.

Singleandproud · 05/10/2024 08:33

If he is applying then he has a copy of her birth certificate it's easy and cheap to apply for one.

Get on it today, get her photos taken at a machine and apply online. If it's a British one he is after and hasn't taken the photos yet you are ahead of the game.

lemonyellows · 05/10/2024 08:38

Yes anyone can order any birth certificate very easily.

Ophy83 · 05/10/2024 08:43

Apply yourself.. you don't want to risk him nor applying despite what he says and then your daughter being unable to go on the trip

ToddlerMumma · 05/10/2024 08:48

I've just applied for passports for my children. Very easy to do, you can take your own photo, you could do it today. Apply now and get it done

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/10/2024 08:59

@Elliephan get that passport applied for now!! he can quite easily do it. it takes 2 minutes for him to order a birth cert online and he receives it a week later. make sure you are named as next of kin and not ex.

Lemonadeand · 05/10/2024 09:00

If he’s already applied for it, talk to the teachers on the trip and make it clear that when she gets home that passport needs to go straight into your hand. If he’s picking her up, they hold onto it and give it to you.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 05/10/2024 09:05

How old is your daughter? Has she had photos taken yet for it?

SauvignonBlonk · 05/10/2024 09:08

The person who applied for the passport is the only person who can cancel it. So, you could book a trip to go on holiday together and he could cancel her passport, stopping her travelling with you.
It'll be control I expect.
I'd apply for it today if I were you.
Childrens passports sit in the passport office's in tray for a week before issue.

Elliephan · 05/10/2024 10:19

Thank you,
He’s British and as far as I’m aware no family outside Uk or plans to move abroad.
She’d play up like hell if he tried.
And as far as ai know he has no plans to take child on holiday - he won’t do anything that puts him out of pocket - there’s always an agenda.
Unfortunately he has her this weekend so I can’t get a passport photo sorted.
i could apply using what I have but it will get rejected as the photo would not comply

Do it as soon as you get her back. Applying for a passport is really easy nowadays and all online. Also, no waits anymore so you'll have it in a few weeks. Plus, if he's already applied, it will tell you. I bet he hasn't.

SatinHeart · 05/10/2024 10:26

I don't actually know if this will help at all, but can you just do the application using a photo you know will be rejected?
It might buy you time to get a better photo, as i think you just have to resubmit the photo not the whole application. Might be worth a try.

Singleandproud · 05/10/2024 10:30

I would start the application online to do so it's jn the system (not sure if it actually makes any difference though) ready to add a photo.

If she is in cohoots with you and doesn't want him to have it, if he goes to get her passport photo at a machine it prints a code to input into the application she can take a photo of it and send it to you. But that would likely cause merry hell for both of you so be aware before you go down that route.
Is he actually organised to do it, it doesn't sound like it. He is more than likely posturing.

Thank you, at what stage in the application process would it notify me that there is already an application in process. What info would it use to register this. If I’m apply with my passport number and my address and he applies with his passport number and address the only connecting info would be child’s name and date of birth…

ToddlerMumma · 05/10/2024 17:11

I assume the home office would notify you if it's a duplicate application? It took less than a week to get the 'your passport is being printed' email so you won't have to wait long
