Is it hard to put shelves on a wall without a handyman? DIY

Just that really. I am looking at some storage cubes and putting them up on a wall. It will help with cleaning and making space. I think there may be a drill in the house but I can't be certain of it either.

Not difficult if you have the right tools. A masonry bit for the drill is essential if you are drilling into brickwork.

If you are drilling into modern plasterboard or an older lath and plaster wall, you'll need the special rawlplug screw fixings designed for those surfaces.

These and the masonry bits are all available at any DIY place.

Apart from that it's simply a case of keeping everything level and the screw holes in the right place which is down to accurate measurement.

I'll just add to this by saying it does depend on your brick. We have engineering brick here and you can't get through it without an SDS drill.

I also find that literally any DIY job you do takes at least twice as long as you think it will, a number of things will go wrong, and you will likely find you don't have quite the right tools or materials, however well you plan.

Good luck though!

A simple shelf doesn't take much skill to put up, but it helps if you have a basic toolkit - drill is a must for obvious reasons (the cordless ones that double up as screwdrivers are fine for most DIY work), wall plugs and screws in the right size (usually come with the shelving), a pencil and a spirit level.

Put the shelf where you want it, check for any obvious hazards like potential wiring or pipes going through the bit you want to drill into. Use the spirit level on top of the shelf to check it's level, use the pencil to mark drill holes for the shelf holders, drill, plug, screw in and you're done.

First time may take you half an hour, it gets quicker each time you practise.

Edited to add that it's always handy to have some basic tools in the house for all sorts of things, so if you do find you currently don't have a drill, definitely get one.
