The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

firing a new nanny because she washed the lettuce for the rabbits under the tap, instead of with Evian water.
Thank you, that made me laugh. Barmy rather than wealthy.

rabbits shouldnt eat lettuce, so definitely fire her

The car always starting, because it’s never more than 2 yrs old.

I can so relate to this.

Winter coat is from 2020 and still going strong so far! Tbf I don't wear the same one every day - also got a smarter but less warm one for going to posher work meetings that was £5 from a charity shop (10 years ago) and a bright yellow ski jacket for winter cycling that cost a tenner from facebook marketplace😉

I did spend £100 on takeaways this month though as work was so stressful, so agree with previous posters that it's partly about what you prioritise...

Well there you go! I often buy and sell 2nd hand stuff on FB marketplace & eBay & sold the Toast coat there when If finally had enough of it.
But we never have takeaways - my expensive luxury is a Riverford organic veg box every week and we very rarely eat meat.

That just shows that there are other people who are as deluded as you, not that you are right 😏

Well actually when you consider the wealth divide, the percentage is much smaller and thus always going to be many more who can’t relate with the let’s say top 10% but even that has a huge leap between 10 and the 1-2%.

When you consider this its normal to expect more people in the 90% to have a different experience.

"Why don't you just buy a bigger house then?" after listening to me casually mention that there wasn't room for a dishwasher in our kitchen.

What kind of car do you have? Mine is 12 years old and always starts first time.

NetZeroZealot · 05/10/2024 10:52

Gwenhwyfar · 05/10/2024 10:36

Nope. Never spent that kind of money on any of those things.

I didn’t say they were cheap and affordable by most people- but they tend to be one off, occasional purchases that many people would consider good value as they last a long time.
I’ve never spent that much either, except, ironically, on my wedding dress which I only wore once, but might consider it and know plenty of others who do.
and on my phone - which is now 5 years old.

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 05/10/2024 10:53

I travel long haul alot due to ill parents living abroad. I have arthritis in my spine and both hips and find it hard work. Last time i could not walk for a day or 2 due to the pain and my very wealthy aunt just commented casually “why don,t you just go first class or business?”

Stravaig · 05/10/2024 10:53

EleanorLucyG · 04/10/2024 22:57

I did. It's a myth that only the wealthy have horses. Plenty of us at the other end doing it on a shoestring and going without to make it happen.

Wait until you see the £300k horsebox your friend will probably buy next...

(I bought a NF pony 8 years ago and he was 6k - can't imagine what you'd get for 400 quid!)

A very sweet but barely trained, large native breed, with a long term skin condition needing management, a short term lameness needing a few weeks box rest to cure and a slight case of insanity. Heaps of fun.

If you think £400 is an expensive watch I’d love to know what you think a £40,000 watch is??

Something I'd sell to raise a 50% deposit on a flat.

😍

Why so many humble brags on this post. Honestly so cringe worthy. Must be new money.

Disappearedwife · 04/10/2024 21:43

Lots of peoples world £400 is cheap for a watch. It’s certainly not an expensive watch! Not one you’d bother putting on your house insurance 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I absolutely would be putting something worth £400 on my insurance. Not sure why that’s so funny to you?

Nelliemellie · 05/10/2024 11:00

Some people on here say “ just get a nanny” or a cleaner just like that. Make me wonder if they are living in mansions.

WillowTit · 05/10/2024 11:02

yes,
like, reduce your hours !
join a gym
etc.,

Like the Mumsnet ones.
Neighbour trouble? Move to a detached house!
Run ragged working all hours to make ends meet? Get a cleaner!

A thread on here about London muggings. Someone says look I walk round London every day in an £8k watch and I’ve never had hassle.

Up pops someone else to tell them well that’s because noones interested in your £8k watch, it’s only worth robbing if it’s £100kish.

I mean it may be true I don’t know but it was phrased in a “you poor povvo think that’s an expensive watch” fashion.

That was my ‘cheapo’ watch they said nobody would apparently look twice at 😂 And it was actually only £5k, mega cheap!

GingerPirate · 05/10/2024 11:04

NetZeroZealot · 05/10/2024 10:16

I fully agree I am financially very privileged.
But everything is relative.
i know people who spend 2 - 3 times more on stuff like that though, and that’s what I think is expensive.
i Would not spend £70 on a winter coat & expect it to last 10 years which my last one did / bought in a Toast sale for £150.

Agree with your post.👍
Not keen on your name!
😝

Arraminta · 05/10/2024 11:05

I believe that wealth isn't about being able to buy material items, although that's nice, obviously. For me, wealth removes worry.

It's never worrying how much your groceries will cost. It's never worrying about replacing white goods. It's never worrying about the cost of your MOT. It's never worrying about the cost of a parking fine. It's never worrying when your DC ask to go on an expensive school trip. It's never worrying about your heating bill. And a thousand other examples.

Wealth removes 90% of worry.

Oh stop with the "new money" nonsense. The poster was clearly talking about people having different priorities. Maybe you should quote the PP who said she spent £100 on takeaways and call that a humble brag and tell her she's new money.

AlwaysGreen · 05/10/2024 11:06

But if you think someone who earns £100k is on the top 2%, and then you have someone like Duke of Westminster (I don't know if he pays any income tax), but the difference even "on the top" is huge!

Oh stop telling me what to write and I'll quote who and what I like thanks😉

How is a box of veg a luxury??

Anyway the rich people I know :-
Go skiing at new year and then again at half term (every year)

Have two high end foreign summer holidays in the 2 month summer holiday

Then tend to have city breaks here there and everywhere

Don't work full time but do 'consulting'

Spend £££ on their children's birthdays and parties

Spend a fortune on eating out /cooking as they can't face cooking

Have regular PT session for each member of the family including the children.

Several different rolexes each.

Notice I have said 'rich. I don't think I know any wealthy people as I associate that with generational wealth.

They start at £17, they're pretty dear!

WillowTit · 05/10/2024 11:18
