The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

Does an expensive (to me anything above £30) tell the time any differently from a cheap one

If I got more time for my money, I guess I might consider it

No it doesn't. But you know that
It is jewellery, A nice to have. There is one at £1.78 on temu if you want to walk about with a plastic dinosaur on your wrist, but no, most people prefer something that feels and looks nice and makes them feel good

There are many things people spend money on that are completely unnecessary. (Make up, jewellery, nails, haircuts to name a few) but even people on benefits spend money on them. Why? Because it makes them feel good.

My DP throws away food. When I was growing up that just would never happen. He doesn't even realise how this, to me, means he's never been poor. Even if something was a bit past its best my Nan still ate it, and I still do too.

i work in a private school and on camp recently. We found a pair of brand new Nike shoes with mud on them from the hike on the last day. Asking the students who owned them one boy said yeh they were mine. Just throw them out they are dirty.

I worked on a summer camp in a private school.

One eight year old used to come in with an apple watch. It got broken. Her parents replaced it with a second apple watch. Some child asked to see it, and the second one got broken again a week later.

They're not cheap.

I can't see the logic in giving a young child an apple watch really

Please start one. I'd love one.

Not in the same vein but I always find it funny how the middle class will insert into conversation at some point, sometimes on the first day you meet them, that they went to private school.

Whereas the UC do not mention it at all.

kitsuneghost · 05/10/2024 00:01

To be fair I have spent more than £400 on cigarettes snd alcohol in the last 6 months
If that isn't wasteful then I don't know what is,
I would have been better off with the watch GrinGrin

Yes! I think it's so bizarre. Like in the working class, no one cares in the slightest where anyone went to school.

I went to a book club the other day. And the man running it , in his first three sentences, brought up what school he went to.(private)

Why would we, adults in our late thirties, care where he went to school. We dont!

Yep lots of expensive phones and watches at my school.

we have lots of international students, full fee paying mostly from China. They are super cashed up. One of my seniors got a brand new Tesla when they got their licence.

You could have got a watch out of that!

We’re not wealthy (which to me has connotations of not needing to earn/ have a job) but my husband earns well. Biggest thing I don’t have to think about that feels a luxury is tickets. I bought two tickets to see England today for £240 and I can just buy them. Bought tickets for cursed child at Christmas for 1k and although did have to discuss with my husband, it wasn’t an issue. Being able tk to see to a show/concert/match I like the look of, go on to the website and buy the best seats without having to budget or think about it is when I really feel the privilege I have now.

Ha you were robbed. We got front row seats to Cursed Child for £20 per show per person through TodayTix.

It's definitely interesting working in a private school! I only worked in one for a short time
.
I remember we had the children do the game , "two truths and a lie" where the other children have to guess the lie,

and one of the children said

"My dad is friends with the king of Spain". And that was the truth.
His dad owned some important company in Spain.

Some serious wealth in those schools. All very nice children though.

Lots of peoples world £400 is cheap for a watch. It’s certainly not an expensive watch! Not one you’d bother putting on your house insurance 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I live on £800 a month. I don't even have house insurance. Think you need to realise just how lucky you are if £400 isn't much to you.

angeldelite · 05/10/2024 00:11

Disappearedwife · 04/10/2024 21:34

Im not particularly wealthy but a £400 watch IS cheap.

An expensive watch is well into the thousands (£3k+). £400 is probably just a metal/plastic watch.

Next thing I’m going to hear is that £50 is an expensive hand bag 😂😂😂

Edited

£3k? How nouveau riche. A true expensive watch starts at £30,000.

I think some people have a funny idea of what "wealthy" means. Wealthy is not a £400 watch, turning the heating up when you're cold or being able to replace the washing machine once a decade. And I say this as someone in a one-income household with a very modest salary.

Edited

This. Some people on this thread seem to define 'wealthy' as anybody isn't in poverty, which is pretty extreme.

ArabellaFishwife · 05/10/2024 00:31

I'd feel like a tosser if I paid thousands for a bloody watch. And if I had a £400 one, which I don't, it would be included in my house insurance, and fuck me, but I was going to quote my policy as proof then.
I'm sure OP wanted better examples of things taken for granted. Here's one from two, not strictly wealthy, but much better off than me friends, who agreed that really, you have to buy your 17 year olds a car.
We can't even afford to buy a car for me.

pollyglot · 05/10/2024 00:32

Ermmm...we decided to pay our cleaning lady (yes, yes, I know, but I had serious health issues at the time) almost twice what she asked for because she was a single mum, had had a rough time, and always talking about being very hard up. Besides which, she is just lovely. She comes in at least every month having very casually had some expensive new hair treatment, nails, holiday... I've never had a manicure, never had a fancy hair session, haven't had a holiday in years except to go babysit the DGC. I am not the least casual about spending money or splashing out on much. Which I could, because I'm, you know... But just don't.

friendlycat · 05/10/2024 00:34

It’s all completely subjective and relative to what you earn. I don’t own a watch worth £400, but my sister has one worth £15k and she really isn’t wealthy but was gifted this. Many truly wealthy people will buy a watch worth tens of thousands of pounds.

But what do you consider wealthy?

People on this forum consider others earning above £50k to be wealthy. How do you classify comfortable, wealthy, high net worth individual, seriously rich or mega rich? It’s all relative.

KingOfPeace · 05/10/2024 00:42

There is a confusion here over being comfortable and being wealthy.

Having an emergency fund to allow you to fix the car or buy a new washing machine or enough spare income to put the heating on is comfortable.

Wealthy is the ' just buy it / do it / go there / leave' brigade with access to unlimited funds.

CluelessAboutBiology · 05/10/2024 00:44

I think wealthy people don’t have to work about keeping a roof over their heads. I was out with a couple of friends, both of whom are mortgage free. We live in the south east.

We were talking about mortgages and one of them asked “How much do people pay on mortgages nowadays, is it about £300 a month?”

Through gritted teeth I managed to politely explain that the mortgage on my one bedroom house was significantly more than that, and that a mortgage on a 4 bed detached house like hers would definitely be a lot more than £300 a month.

EasyComfortDishes · 05/10/2024 00:47

LadyDimpletonFrisby · 04/10/2024 23:55

There. I imagine you are most chuffed to get that off your chest. I am glad that you chose to share your ability to buy some tickets with an anonymous forum on the global internet.

😂 it’s literally a thread about small (in the grand scheme of things) stuff you can buy without worrying about it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/10/2024 00:49

I once bought an 6 month old unused Kitchen Aid mixer off ebay "selling because of change of kitchen decor". That blew my mind. A brand new KitchenAid for £150 so a third of the purchase price, because it was the wrong colour. What got me most about it was that it was black! Black goes with everything!

Another thing I now enjoy - not having to shop
around. I don’t have to visit 50 websites to try and find the best deal then cross my fingers it isn’t shonky. I hated doing that and now J never have to do it again! (G-d willing).

There are 142 watches for sale in Argos for under £25. I bet many more watches are bought for under £25 than are bought for £400+

RiversandStreams · 05/10/2024 00:54

@CluelessAboutBiology Inclined to agree with you about zero worries about money. We have a lifestyle of no issue with any bills including replacing anything, have had two holidays this year and out to lunch every week. We also have zero mortgage. We keep total silence regarding our financial affairs. We look like a pretty regular MC family, comfortable but not flashy. We actually have about 25 years living expenses in investments and savings. We have never told anyone we have paid our mortgage off, not even our parents.
