9 month old routine and health visitor

My 9 month old has his health visitor check this morning and I have come away feeling very deflated. He still wakes once in the night for a bottle and goes back off to sleep easily after. He goes to bed at 7pm and goes straight down to sleep. The health visitor said to me that he must be too tired when he goes to bed as he should be taking 20 minutes to get so sleep? He is still on 3 naps a day, 1 hour in the morning, 1.5 hours after lunch and 30 mins later afternoon, still leaving a 3 hour wake window before bed. She told me he needs to be on 2 naps a day, 45 mins in the morning and a longer one in the afternoon and to also bring his bedtime forward to half 6. I feel deflated as I feel like we have a good routine that works for us. He is still on 4 bottles a day (along with meals) and she told me he should be weaned off bottles by the time he is 1?

what is everyone else’s 9 month old routines?
thank you! X

Nonsense. It sounds like you have a wonderful routine for him and unless she raised any actual concerns about his health carry on with what you are doing. In a couple of months you might find he needs two naps but if I remember with dds the morning one was nearly always more than an hour. It's trial an error a lot of the time. I bf but honestly do not know a single person who got their dc to drop bottles by one!

NahNotHavingIt · 04/10/2024 13:52

I feel like we have a good routine that works for us.

And that's all you need, so ignore whatever she said.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/10/2024 14:02

What you are doing sounds perfect. I wish my DCs could go straight to sleep like that!

Ignore ignore ignore , sounds like a great routine you've gotten your baby in !
The naps will naturally shorten , the milk will become less when baby is ready and eating more solids and waking up just once in the night is great for a 9 month old !

Buddy2021 · 04/10/2024 14:05

Thank you for your replies , it’s really helpful to hear from other people! We have tried the two naps a day before but because he wakes at 6am it means he just gets way too tired during his wake windows to only have two naps. I know we are very lucky that he goes down so well, but she made out that he shouldn’t be going down so well! Confusing 😂😂 xx

My dd was one 1 afternoon nap by 3 months old. As long as he is happy then it's your life, not your health visitors.

I would agree with starting to reduce bottles so that he's not reliant on calories from formula and also because they're bad for teeth though.

lovelyhat · 04/10/2024 14:07

There are some excellent HVs out there but an awful lot of them talk absolute rubbish. Ignore this one - your routine sounds great.

workplaceshenanigans · 04/10/2024 14:09

Ignore what the health visitor is saying. Your dc is happy, you are happy, the routine you have is working fine, so why on Earth would she want you to mess with it? There is no rule about how long they are supposed to take before going to sleep, that is ridiculous.

Ignore the business about giving up a bottle by 1 as well. During the day you could introduce a sippy cup in due course, but a bottle at bedtime or during the night will be fine to help dc settle.

Completelyjo · 04/10/2024 14:11

When he stops sleeping at night or wakes early then try two naps, at the minute if 3 is working for you then leave it.

9mo does 2 naps and has done since at least 5 months. About an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. Occasionally they will be shorter and occasionally they will be longer! Depending on naps he goes to bed anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30.

He has 3 6oz bottles a day and non overnight.

There is no magic recipe for every baby.

Babyboomtastic · 04/10/2024 14:13

Your routine sounds absolutely perfect for his age, and more importantly, it's working for you and your family.

MumChp · 04/10/2024 14:14

Ignore her. You are doing great!

TheShellBeach · 04/10/2024 14:15

Goodness, all babies are different.

Your HV sounds like most of them - idiotic.

You've got your baby into a lovely routine. Well done, and pay no attention to her.

paristotokyo · 04/10/2024 14:15

Honestly sounds great to me. I have same age dc and we definitely don't have it together in the same way. We are still on 2 hourly wake ups etc just ignore her, you're doing fine.

Merrow · 04/10/2024 14:17

DS2 is 18 months and I'd love for to be as good a sleeper!

The bottles advice is about their teeth I think? Same reason for not continuing with a dummy. We just moved onto a cup with DS1 at 12 months, but he didn't get the comfort from bottles that some babies do.

CrispieCake · 04/10/2024 14:27

Is this your first baby? If so, absolutely ignore and just do what works for you. Second and subsequent babies are often dragged from pillar to post, out on activities for older kids and on the school run, and they do absolutely fine.

BarbaraHoward · 04/10/2024 14:35

She's right about the bottles, but 12 months is ages away really, another third of his life so far! And I'd be worrying about the overnight one last and hoping he got there himself first.

The sleep thing is mad, I'm pretty sure both of mine were on three naps at that age but regardless it's working for him so don't touch it!
