Scam advice needed

I just had new window cleaners round. They want me to use their payment system where they take an automatic payment out of my account every month. I'm not giving them my bank details and 3 digit number and said so. They haven't replied to my text asking for their bank account number and sort code. I find this very suspect indeed.
Anyway I'm refusing to pay by that method. I have never seen it before.
All my other window cleaners I've just paid by bank transfer.
What do you think?

I wouldn't do that, you may not want to use them all the time and it could be difficult to stop the payments. Probably not exactly a scam, assuming they are a proper firm. not just some chancers knocking doors and after your bank details..

We get persecuted by dodgy people wanting to do everything from cleaning windows, to roof repairs, clean the drive, cut the trees, I wouldn't give them the time of day let alone my bank details.

I wouldn't do that I would find someone else I paid my window cleaner by bank transfer

shellyleppard · 04/10/2024 10:06

I always pay my window cleaner with cash

Avoid direct debits - use a standing order if you want to pay monthly.

leafybrew · 04/10/2024 10:08

Nope - sounds v dodgy

rainbowunicorn · 04/10/2024 10:09

Nope, wouldn't be doing that. No reason why they can't give you their bank details and upu can either set up a standing order or just do a bank transfer as and when.

Ineedanewsofa · 04/10/2024 10:09

Do not give them those details! It means they can take however much they want off that card whenever they want in theory. Hopefully you have multi factor authentication set up so if anyone does try to do a transaction you have to confirm it via a text code or through your banking app, but for ‘smaller’ amounts MFA isn’t always required so the transactions could go through.
You are completely right to be cautious @Gettingbysomehow

Some do it round here, where you pay every month. But I don't see why they'd need the 3 digit code - that is well dodgy, and of course they could then pretend to be you and buy stuff online. If they won't give you their bank details then I'd tell them to jog on.

Doggymummar · 04/10/2024 10:10

I give mine cash, or transfer the money if I am out. Do not give them the three digits, they can buy anything with that.

Don’t use your bank card to set up recurring payments. They are really difficult to stop and I had to close my bank account once to stop the payments. Direct debit or standing order is easier, although direct debits can be changed at their end if they want, standing orders can’t. If you want to use them, I would tell them standing order or nothing (if they don’t let you pay on delivery of service).

Our window cleaners have a payment set up but I did it on an online system, and they text me they've been and will take the charge. I don't think any individual person has my details. But they do many houses in the street, wear branded shirts and I see them - it wasn't just some bloke. My last window cleaner was recommended and it was cash.

Not sure if it’s the same people, but we experienced a window cleaning scam company a few days ago. They requested payment for cleaning that we didn’t ask for. We looked up all of the 1* reviews of the company on Trust Pilot, and many other people have experienced the same as us. Report to Action Fraud. They may come back and do your windows and charge even if you ask them not to. We will call 999 if they show up again.
