Regular Reins for Older Kid?

BakerBop · 04/10/2024 05:25

I'm looking for some new reins for my daughter. She's 5 minutes from hers not buckling up anymore but I don't want the vest/bib ones like most I've found for older kids. I just want normal ones in a bigger size. And they need the short clip-on straps as well as the walking strap. Anyone have recommendations? Thx.

I agree with PP that you shouldn't need this for a 9yo with no additional needs.

However, we use handling belts for older children who need close guiding in a busy or unfamiliar place.

Reins on a nine year old because you can't teach her right from wrong. Wow. That's on you not her.

When do you see her learning the skill of staying safe in the pavement? When she's 12 ? 14 ?

It's better to teach them to do what they are told when they are younger. It's good for them to learn such life skills.

You're needing to give yourself a good shake. You're not parenting that child well with regard to teaching her to do what she is told. Sorry OP but you need to seek advice if you can't get a nine year old to walk beside you without running off.

Or are you in denial about the additional needs she may have?

Thanks for the suggestion, but this sort of thing isn't what I'm looking for. I just need regular reins as that is what works, just in a bigger size.

It makes me feel extremely uncomfortable that I have suggested something that could be potentially abusive.

You're trying to help and I appreciate that. You haven't suggested anything wrong in any way. Her reins are for her safety. Everyone in her life sees and knows that. Like you I wish everything was simpler in life but life is life and safety and safety. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Her teachers know and understand fully (as does her GP and all the other adults in her life). She wears them on the walk to school up to the gate and back from school. It's no more complicated than a basic safety measure. I hope that helps.

I would look at getting some made. Saddlers here would be able to do this.

Right so she DOES have additional needs that school and doctors are aware of and u just don't like associated her with the words' special needs. Well, special need isn't a dirty word. And there is no shame. Yes it does help.

SpinningTops · 07/10/2024 19:46

I'm not sure whether this is real but since MN reinstated it I'll assume it is.

Please can I urge you to reconsider that your child might have SN? If you, school and the GP all know she has reins for her safety I can't see how you can have got to this point without it being mentioned.

I get it, DS (5) is unpredictable and can be difficult when out but equally he is awaiting an autism assessment.

I honestly can not comprehend how you and everyone around you is ok with this if you child is neurotypical.

chicken2015 · 07/10/2024 19:48

I would suggest when enquiring u don't insist that ur child doesn't have additional or speical needs as they will also assume u r being abusive. And will not sell to you.

You won’t find simple reins for older DC like you do for toddlers/preschoolers because older DC have significantly more strength, so the reins need to stand up to far more force.

Crelling do walking harnesses up to adult size, but they have more than one clip.

I am amazed the school and GP know and are supportive of the use of reins but haven’t referred DD onwards for further assessment.

Thanks! I hadn't thought about that idea. If they do the sewing of the straps that could be a good option.

Thanks for the help. The strength thing makes sense. It just surprises me that the same design can't be made with stronger parts. I've looked at the Crelling ones but the vest/bib design is just too involved. Thanks for the idea though. I think I'll look around tomorrow to see if someone can make some.

It is not just about the strength of the material the reins are made out of. It is about the distribution of force on the older child/adult’s chest.

StressedQueen · 07/10/2024 22:00

She must have special needs if everyone in her life is okay with a 9 year old walking about with reins on them. That's obviously okay if there is a valid reason but if she genuinely doesn't, then she doesn't need them. Maybe take the fact that her ones now are not fitting as a sign
