My dd is nearly 16 she started her periods at 11 and had pretty much regular periods ever since. Then about 5 months ago they stooped totally. She has had quite a few little illnesses in that time mainly high fevers and she has been tired - she fainted during one if the fevers and i took her to a and e. She had a negative pregnancy test there - plus she says shes never had sex and i do believe her on that.

shes a healthy weight and height hasnt changed weight and isnt an athlete!

I was just hoping anyone could tell me what sort of thing the doctor will ask or do? What could cause this? Google seems to suggest pregnancy (which she isnt) or stress which she really doesnt seem to be plus does that stop it for many months?

im feeling really uneasy about it although i dont know why!

Could be thyroid. I had an overactive thyroid in my early 20s and had no period for 10 months.

How is her weight? When some people are under/overweight it can effect periods also she might just have a sporadic cycle so be prepared to be dismissed "for now"

You'll need to expect blood testing, urine testing, and general health and lifestyle questions. They will probably measure her height and weight. They will ask questions about sexual activity and may test for pregnancy.

They might not diagnose her until after those tests return. It can be a whole spectrum of things, from thyroid issues, hormones, PCOS, nutritional deficiencies, and stress.

She is in the healthy range for her height according to the charts i dont think her weight has changed much over the last 6 months.

i am worried they will dismiss it but it does seem odd to me that she started young (jyat turned 11) had regular periods then just stopped!

I have prepared her for the fact they will assume shes pregnant until they test! she just seems to not care but im starting to worry between the fevers and periods i dont know i just feel anxious about it!

i have 5 daughters so im used to teen girls but something just doesnt feel right and im not sure how to explain that to the gp!

Just be as honest as you can and share your concerns together. I hope it goes well and you get the answers you need.

Actually I think you should say exactly that. A good doctor will take you seriously. Make sure you see a doctor not a PA.

Waitingforthree · 03/10/2024 21:33

She needs an ultrasound scan hopefully they can arrange that urgently. They will probably do bloods too. I think you should make them fully aware how you feel something isn’t right your intuition is important

Jammedchakra · 03/10/2024 21:33

They can Hormone test her. My DSIS had the menopause in her 20’s, stuff can happen. Don’t be dismissed. I’d take a pregnancy test that she’s done that morning to get that out of the way.

Say that! I once said that on the phone to the dr when DS was tiny. He told me to drop everything and bring him in, that he would make time to see him as soon as we got there. When I got there he said when a mum says that, it rings alarm bells for him.

Josette77 · 03/10/2024 21:47

Say something's not right.

I said that to my doctor and my son was rushed to emergency and in the hospital for a week.

A mother's intuition is under valued.
