Should I go to the Dr for painful lump on labia? Will it just go away?

Just that really. Lump on vaginal wall since Sunday. It’s bigger than a marble. It’s painful and it feels like the pain is spreading around the top of my leg.

Is this worth going to the Dr for? I am a teacher and getting time off work is very difficult.

Of course you should go.

I’m always worried about wasting the Drs time, and I’ve only been in my new job 4 weeks.

Vaginal wall? Do you mean internally? .. if so then yes I would go and get it checked. I've had a Bartholin's type of cyst on my labia minora and holy cow it hurt!! And yes the pain went down my legs. I was on holiday and preparing to go to A&E and the 'bang'! It popped - the relief was immense. It was ok not to see a doctor in my case but I would have if it hadn't burst that day.

Could you visit a sexual health clinic? The one I work at is open until 8pm most days, so would suit your working hours. If the lump is between your labia and vaginal wall it could be a Bartholin abscess, which can get quite nasty so would require prompt treatment.

Fluffyowl00 · 03/10/2024 21:03

Try putting hot water (as hot as you can bear) on a cotton wool pad on it a few times. It might come to a head and then drain. It might be a Benthoilian (?) cyst. But yes if it’s really sore go to the doctor.

I’ve had this and it’s gone away eventually by itself but I would never recommend any woman ignore her symptoms.

flowergirl24 · 03/10/2024 21:05

Sorry, it’s actually on one of the outer parts, the labia majora (I had to look that up)

I wasn’t too concerned before now but it feels like the pain is travelling from the lump sort of down my leg.

You could try hot compresses for next couple of days and if it doesn't improve or burst then def go to doctor as you might need antibs. It does sound like a cyst or ingrown hair though.

Xyz1234567 · 03/10/2024 21:06

It's probably nothing serious but it's not worth risking it. I know you feel guilty as a teacher taking time off but they should understand and you're not likely to be out of school long. Your health is more important. School won't collapse without you.

It go to a GUM clinic personally. It's their area and no messing around with GP appointments then.

HellonHeels · 03/10/2024 21:06

That needs to be seen. Can't imagine your teaching will be great if you're struggling with fanny swelling and pain going down your legs. Hope you feel better soon.

AutumnGarland · 03/10/2024 21:07

Could be a cyst or ingrown hair, but best to get it checked ASAP.

Foxblue · 03/10/2024 21:08

It might be a Bartholins cyst that's got a bit infected, have a Google for Bartholins cyst and see if that matches, but yes ring GP! And try and sit in warm baths for as much as possible in the meantime, if it is a cyst it can help with the pain and inflammation.

Freakydeak · 03/10/2024 21:09

Whatever it is sounds infected and worth seeing a doctor.

That’s really good advice actually, as I don’t have to fiddle about with trying to get into the Drs.

Are they able to prescribe?

Yes, we can diagnose and prescribe as we keep medication on site (and it’s free!)
