Anyone have any experience of alopecia in children? What caused it for your children? What age did it start?

We’ve just recently found some patches on my daughter’s head. The nurse prescribed a steroid cream and said try a multivitamin and iron supplement and sent a link to a website. Didn’t seem that helpful.
Were just hoping it doesn’t get worse. One patch is quite large but luckily it’s near her neck so her other hair covers it.

Can I ask how old your daughter is please? Does she seem to have any stress or anything that's causing it.

She’s 5. We don’t think she’s stressed. It did happen either at the end of the summer holidays or at the start of the school term but she loves school so don’t think it was anything to do with that.
Does your child have alopecia?

Yes he developed a patch back in end of June and another patch around 2 weeks ago. Seen the gp mainly to see if he is deficient in anything so they are organising blood tests. He is 6 and half both his patches are at the front top not at the back

I had it when I was 15 due to severe stress and trauma. It lasted about a year, then it got better again. It didn't occur to me to seek any treatment for it, I didn't even know anything existed!

It's actually come back again this year so hopefully it's going to go away again soon as I'm sick of pulling out handfuls of hair with my brush every morning.

Hi, I had alopecia as a teen. Happy to help if I can.

Mine was probably triggered by a few very turbulent years at home, parents divorced, moved to a school where I only know one person, mum met someone else, she got pregnant and then moved us again as they didn't get on!

I had a few treatments, steroids, iron infusion, biopsies taken.

Lost around 90% of the hair on my head. Got a wig and it started growing back!

I'm mid 30's now. Have a few patches that never grow back, it's scarred but apart from that it's thicker and curlier than before.

Hope your little ones are OK and be kind to yourselves. It's awful to watch your child go through something like alopecia x

Thank you. Luckily at the moment ours remains quite hidden from slightly longer hair so we don't seem bothered at the moment. Hoping it doesn't get any worst

My daughter had it when she was 13. It all fell out within about a month. There was never a cause that we could pinpoint although she was having issues with her legs which was later diagnosed as hypermobility. Not sure if that is related or coincidence.

We had a dermatologist appt who gave us some steroid stuff but she didn’t end up using it. She also got a wig from Little Princess Trust. Luckily it started growing back after about a year and is as thick as ever now!

Any updates please?

Any updates please?

Nothing showed up as abnormal in the bloods and both patches have regrown. No further patches have appeared.
