Haha I'm going anyway!

I've paid for the event.

I was just wondering what there is to go and see while I'm there.

Maybe someone on here liked something there

The cathedral is lovely and good for an hours wander.

fluffytail · 03/10/2024 13:44

My only two recommendations are the Gloucester services on the M5 and Gloucester cathedral which is magnificent.

Aussieland · 03/10/2024 13:46

The docks are also lovely now. I grew up near Gloucester and recently went back and it’s so much nicer! The cathedral is also fab

I'm proud of myself for spelling it correctly by the way. Haha. It's an awkward one to spell.

I was writing the title a couple of times, and it didn't look right, so I just guessed at it, and changed one O to an E.

I've looked it up now, and I did spell it right!

do you have a car and what do you like doing. There’s some great walks in the surrounding area, Cheltenham is better for shopping although the quays are ok for half an hour or so.

TheBunyip · 03/10/2024 13:47

is there still a tailor of goucester shop? oh there is House of the Tailor of Gloucester | Beatrix Potter Shop (tailor-of-gloucester.org.uk)

there are little pockets of lovely ancient buildings which are nice for a wander, but i couldn't tell you where - probs around the cathedral which is wonderful

Beatrix Potter Shop

Cathedral, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury.

The centre is pretty under-loved. Docks are OK too.

ChairmanMeowww · 03/10/2024 13:51

The quays, the cathedral, a walk along the canal, there’s a dry ski slope if that’s your bag! There’s a ghost walking tour which looks quite good.

Robinswood hill is nice for a walk, as is Painswick beacon.

There’s a new Padel tennis place that also looks good. Although don’t know if it’s actually open yet!

Cheltenham is good for shopping, the Cotswolds are gorgeous and Forest of Dean very good for hiking/biking if you want to go further afield.

burnoutbabe · 03/10/2024 13:52

There are plenty of very old buildings as you walk from cathedral into the centre. And some excavations (near boots?)

Else it's lot of coffee shops and Waterstones and charity shops. Fine for a few hours. The docks and outlet centre are newer and have fancier shops.

Billybagpuss · 03/10/2024 13:58

I don’t think the padel club is open yet.

I quite the Guildhall, it’s good for some events and films, it’s a small old fashioned style cinema with a bar. They also do courses and things there.

there is a normal cinema in the quays.

HouseofHolbein · 03/10/2024 14:02

Oooh we're in Gloucester in November to see the mighty Skindred at the guildhall 😁 staying overnight.

Any recommendations for Sunday lunch? Love a carvery tbh 😊

"...seeing historical sites, looking at old buildings,"

As others have said, the cathedral and the docks.

If you're into it, then several parts of the cathedral were used as filming locations for some of the Harry Potter films:

Also there are three Tudor period houses that have been set up as they would have been in the 16th century. You can visit anytime and they also do guided tours at the weekend:

Gloucester docks are also home to the National Waterways Museum, this is all about canals and barges etc.

Gloucester city centre is rough, with a very dark underbelly - you'll understand what I mean as soon as you get there. But the quays ( literally give mins walk from town) are Lovely with loads of restaurants situated around the canal and even a pretty good Wetherspoons. If you stick to walking around that side, you'll like it. It's truly a town of 2 halves unfortunately.

Nannyoggapple · 09/10/2024 08:26

Thanks for the replies.

I've been and gone now. Gloucester is definitely a bit rough (no offense to anyone from there).

I stayed in a hotel in the centre and I was laughing reading the reviews. Loads of people were saying in the reviews

"The hotel is in a dodgy part of town"

And the owner kept replying "what do you mean dodgy, it's in the town centre"

I went to Cheltenham one day which as nice, and I even got motivated to go down to Bath, from Gloucester the next day. as I had never been . Bath is lovely.

I'm glad I saw Gloucester but yeah I agree with what was said!
