Really worried about DH and sleep apnoa

DH has been snoring for around 10 years. Around 5 years ago I was worried he had sleep apnoa and after a great deal of persuasion went to the GP. I had to go with him to encourage him to go but the GP never referred him and he refused to chase the referral.

A few weeks ago he agreed again to get tested. As we had private health he went with this and did a sleep study at home. It turns out to be very severe, his score was 65. However the private consultant said they would need to refer him back to the nhs to get a cpap machine. I am now really worried about how long this will take. The consultant said it will be really quick becuase it is so severe but I am not sure if this is really the case. Has anyone else had an urgent referral on the nhs for this? Although he has had a home sleep study the consultant said he would need to attend a sleep clinic to get the cpap configured correctly. Does anyone know how quick this is likely to be?

I was wondering about just buying a machine as a temporary measure but if it needs configuring then that is not much help. Is there anything else he could do in the meantime to help? It doesn't help that the private consultant has now gone on holiday for a month so cannot answer any questions about the process. I am surprised that there are no private sleep clinics that our health insurance (axa) will use and it still has to go through the nhs.

I know some family member and NHS was pretty fast with that . Yes he will need to go to the sleep clinic but they will not take ages .

Thanks Enzee11. Please can I ask what you mean by pretty fast, weeks or months?

It took about 3 months, I think.

65 is a very high score and potentially he should not be driving. He should declare this to DVLA if it is affecting his ability to drive through being tired.

The support from sleep clinics is really good and from being diagnosed after the home study to getting a machine was about 2-3 weeks.

If you can afford to buy one yourself then I would do so

My referral was very quick. Maybe just a few weeks? But when he's referred you should get the link to the choices if hospital that you have, which shows their waiting lists.

Having said that, if your referral is urgent, the published list might not be accurate for you.

The weird thing is that he does not seem to be excessively sleepy during the day. He is certainly extremely noisy at night though.

If you buy a cpap machine yourself how do you know how to configure it correctly?

Hi.my daughter had been put in for an emergency operation with the NHS so they should rush any help you need. They have put her down had urgent I've got to wait 3 weeks. Hope you get help fast

Private hospitals and clinics do offer sleep studies and cpap, whereabouts in the country are you based.

Samphire44 · 16/11/2024 15:55

Well he is still waiting. He has an nhs appointment with a consultant in mid Dec who will then repeat the private sleep study he has already done.

The private consultant who did the sleep study is still saying they cannot provide a cpap machine privately.

I guess he could buy one online but then it will not be configured to his requirements.

He could see another sleep study doctor privately who provides cpap
