Should I give coat to charity shop or bin

I bought a waterproof lands end coat a year ago. It was about £100. I started having problems when I washed it. If I wear it in heavy rain my arms get soaked. It doesn’t feel fair to give it to a charity shop incase someone buys it not realising the issue. But feels wasteful to bin.

Just tell them it needs re-proofing - someone will tackle the project and buy themselves a bargain!

TheBossOfMe · 01/10/2024 20:34

Can you not re-waterproof it with waterproof spray? You probably just need that for it to be usable again.

Whyherewego · 01/10/2024 20:34

You just need to reapply waterproofing. You can buy a spray to do this and reapply to the coat and it should be fine

Why don't you just re-waterproof it and use it? Or re-waterproof and feel better about donating.

RachPelders · 01/10/2024 20:34

Neither. Sell it for whatever it will go for on vinted, with an accurate description.

Them keep or donate the money.

Boidont · 01/10/2024 20:36

Pretty sure Salvation Army will take ‘unwearable’ clothes as they recycle them/use them for rags.
Maybe you could drop off to them with a note to explain the issue you had?

Beucauseoftheslip · 01/10/2024 20:36

Please don't just throw it away 😭

2dogsandabudgie · 01/10/2024 20:37

I would donate to a charity shop and explain it's not actually waterproof anymore. It may still be a nice coat for someone to wear. Even if the charity shop can't sell it they will put it in the rags bag. Better than going to landfill

BrieHugger · 01/10/2024 20:37

It’s free to sell clothes on eBay now, so I’d do that as long as you’re willing to post it. You can then put everything in the description.

If you do decide to give to charity, pin a note to it saying it needs reproofing.

Chocolatebuttonsandprosseco · 01/10/2024 20:38

Just rewaterptoof it. My husband just did it, you get the product from Amazon and do it in the washing machine.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/10/2024 20:39

I'd call Landsend and ask them what they recommend, they might say waterproofing or they might send you a new one. Being an American company their customer service is very good, they were very helpful when I had a problem in the past.

IOYOYO · 01/10/2024 20:39

Waterproof clothing shouldn’t be washed normally as detergent damages the waterproof seal. But you can buy specialist wash and re waterproofing liquid. It’s about £15 for both- takes a couple of loads of laundry and it will be fine. Nic-Wash and Nic-wax!

Yes exactly this!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/10/2024 20:43

Stick it in the washing machine with some Nikwax reproofing wash?

Sounds easy

Ratfinkstinkypink · 01/10/2024 21:08

You need some Nikwax

Comedycook · 01/10/2024 21:21

I'd put it on vinted but explain clearly in the description what the issue is.

That's a super tip.

ForPearlViper · 01/10/2024 22:32

At the biggest charity shops near to me, the maximum price for coats are £5 and many are £3. I don't think anyone is going to cry about getting soggy arms for that price. Having bought more incredible coats than I care to admit there, I certainly wouldn't.

However, I have bought from Lands End many times in the past and found their customer service incredibly helpful.

Shyfrog · 02/10/2024 20:34

To be honest I already bought a (used) new coat before starting the thread to replace this one, so I will just give it away and explain the issue to see if anyone wants to water proof it
