Sainsbury’s Xmas temp hours?

Has anyone ever worked at Sainsbury’s as a Christmas temp? I wondered how flexible they are with shifts over this period. I would only be able to work around my husband’s shifts so not set days each week and wondered whether that would be possible.

My SIL did the year before last and she didn’t get a choice of shifts, she was asked when she was interviewed for her availability split into Mon-Sun Day/Night and then they allocate the shifts based on that. It’s not a case of being able to pick & choose each week or at least it wasn’t then as they have to plan rotas out.

When I did the job they gave me set days and times. (Same time each day I worked )

To be honest I don't think only being able to work around your husbands shifts is going to work for any job.

Very few people get to set their own hours.

Yes you’re probably right!

I used to interview for the Christmas positions! Definitely set shifts however they often want people for a few shifts (12h minimum, or at least it used to be!) so if you can commit to just say 2 shifts per week, you can pick up extra overtime depending on your DHs shifts. Being willing/eager for the late nights and weekends is most likely to get you in!

Yes, this is very true @Sunsflowetsinthegarden

I didn't mean my prior post to sound so negative. It's excellent you want to pick up some extra money and you never know. There's a lot to be said for willingness and enthusiasm.

To be honest you are probably right though - there are no set days that are the same each week that I can do because of his shifts. Ideally there’d be something I can do from home or on an ad hoc basis as long as I complete a certain amount of hours etc. I do already work two days a week in a school but was wondering if there was something I could do on the side (wishful thinking I think!)

What do you do in the school?

I teach. But I do not want to do anymore than two days. Was after something flexible I can do around my husband’s shifts and a toddler!

Look at admin for charges or churches, they often need someone to do x number of hours but you wfh so you can fit around other things. I used to have a 4 hour per week second job getting the Sunday services put onto power point and uploaded to the system

StMarieforme · 01/10/2024 20:04

I was going to suggest online marking/ teaching for adults. There's usually flexible vacancies and you can pick up as much work as you want.

Doggymummar · 01/10/2024 20:05

I think it's worth asking. I applied to Waitrose during lockdown and they offered me permanent nights. I couldn't do it. Didn't take it, but they have to cover certain shifts and if you can do unsociable hours you might be lucky.

That would be good. Will have a browse thanks! Was charges a misprint…?

Just a thought - there's an app called 'Indeed Flex' which Sainsbury's use to fill the gaps throughout the year. Basically temping but for retail. Often they use it more at Christmas. The pay is good (better than Sainsbury's itself) and once you've done 1 shift you can ask them to prioritise you for future shifts before they add them to the portal - if they like you they'll do it!

Not a guarantee and of course, if you can find something better go for it. But if not I'd recommend having a look!
