Fascinated by fake Amazon scam call - how does it work?

Yesterday I got a phone call from someone saying they were calling from Amazon. The person volunteered my name, but used my maiden name (I changed to my married name on Amazon years ago). They then asked me if I'd received a text, and lo and behold one popped up with my Amazon sign in code, like a forgotten your password code. Obviously I hung up and blocked the caller.

But my question is how do they have my first name, maiden name, phone number, and presumably know the correct Amazon account associated with these details (although not my married name)? Do they therefore know my email too? How?! I've been puzzling and I can't work it out.

leaks of personal info (emails, names, addreesses) are for sale on sketchy parts of the internet, for free from various leaks etc haveibeenpwned shows you what PI has been leaked from some of the big breaches.

they don’t know for certain you have an Amazon account for the most part it’s just most people do.

Ah okay that makes sense. So they have my maiden name and phone number, and that's it. I suppose that's not much really is it, and I get why that's easy for them to get hold of. Thanks!

My laptop has told me of my accounts and passwords that have been compromised - the details were on the dark web.
