is it mansplaining if a woman does it? Lighthearted

....and if not what is it? Just that really. I have just been mansplained by a woman. Not giving detail as its on socials and trackable. It was definitely a mansplain and the person appears to be a woman by their published detail.

'Arrogant condescension' maybe, without the sexist element of 'mansplaining' proper. Mansplaining is when a bloke assumes you'll know less about something than he does just because you're a woman.

yes, I have zero idea why this person assumed I knew less about this (very simple) subject.

Bloody annoying??

Seeline · 01/10/2024 10:22

patronising?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/10/2024 10:23

I think there are many of these people in the world of both sexes. Including men who do this to other men. It only becomes a mansplaining thing if it's something a man wouldn't say to another man. That's why i think a lot of men presumed to be mansplaining are not necessarily doing this but are just arrogant twats. @ErrolTheDragon 's definition is spot on.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2024 10:26

With some of them (thinking of a bloke in our neighbourhood) it's because they don't realise that what they're pontificating about is actually rather simple and obvious.

But it wasn’t because this person was male and you were female, therefore not mansplaining. Sometimes other people just aren’t very bright, and therefore don’t have much of a sense of what other people are likely to know. My well-meaning but not very sharp SIL has form for lengthy explanations of everyday general knowledge topics, often because she’s literally just found out about whatever it is (internet grooming of children, the planning permission process, the Elizabeth Line) and somehow can’t grasp that other people are already well aware of them.

I can call it a lot of things whether it is from a man or a woman to the same but everyone uses 'mansplaining' because they think it's 'clever'

Patronising, rude, condescending, childish

MissSkegness1951 · 01/10/2024 10:31

Mansplaining is made up hateful nonsense.

What an odd statement. It really isn’t.

It's really not, unfortunately, but the term is used too widely when it's just a bloke who is a twat being a twat.

They aren’t using it because it’s ‘clever’, but because it’s useful shorthand for a frequent, gendered phenomenon.

FetchezLaVache · 01/10/2024 10:47

My SIL Phoebe does this. There is not a single subject on which she is not willing to pontificate whilst assuming zero knowledge on the pontificee's part. I have heard her solemnly explaining bovine lactation to dairy farmers. I call it 'Phoeb-splaining'.
