Probably a scam, but would it have gone through on the official website if it wasn’t?

I got two emails from “Royal Mail” claiming I had two letters I need to sign for. I clicked on the email address and it didn’t match so I assumed scam and deleted it.

I then went through the offical website and arranged a redelivery just in case and it went through. I even got an email confirming my redelivery. Was this just an automatic email and means nothing, or does it mean that the other emails were right and I did need a redelivery

Seems like a scam, all you may do is wait for Royal Mail to come back again, do not give bank details etc.

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 08:51

Nope. No bank details given. I didn’t click the potential scam link. I went through the official Royal Mail website which doesn’t ask for payment anyway

How would Royal Mail have your email address?

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 08:57

Urm….actually good point Grin

How would Royal Mail have your email address?

Royal Mail website has my email address as I had opened an account to get mail collected from my home address and buy postage labels.

Sometimes if I'm receiving a package from Royal Mail the company that I've ordered from must share my email address as I receive email notifications of the delivery due.

ChessieFL · 01/10/2024 09:00

I get emails from Royal Mail about parcels they’re delivering - I assume the company sending the parcel passes on the email address.

JennieTheZebra · 01/10/2024 09:00

The big question is, are you expecting anything? I mean, people don’t just send letters which need to be signed for on a whim. If not, it’s probably a scam tbh.

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 09:01

No not exactly but it’s supposedly from HMRC which technically I could be expecting something as I’m coming to the end of one of my benefits

That's how phishing scams work.
They throw out loads of emails and sometimes they catch you as you are already expecting a parcel/bank with the same bank etc and so click on dodgy links without thinking

Lindy2 · 01/10/2024 09:05

Wouldn't benefits be from DWP?

HMRC is usually tax related stuff.

Perhaps go into a local Post Office and show them what you've been sent. Alternatively contact Royal Mail online/via email and ask if it's genuine.

Don't pay anything online or disclose any bank details until you know for sure.

Thank you. I didn’t put in any bank details at all. I went through the official link (on Google) rather than the scam link and it didn’t ask for any payment or bank details. I’m going to assume now that the confirmation email was just an automatic email rather than a proper confirmation. I guess I’ll find out on Thursday if anything turns up

Just gonna add a picture of the email so people can be aware too. If you receive an email like this, do not click on the link. Instead go to official website and do it through them.

Probably a scam, but would it have gone through on the official website if it wasn’t?

If it was "HMRC" it was definitely a scam.

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 09:11

Actually now I’ve posted it, I can see an error in the sentence. It says “press reschedule now and no one will deliver it” I guess it’s supposed to “or” or “some one”

How would Royal Mail have your email address?

Royal Mail send me texts and emails all the time to let me know about missed deliveries or when my parcels are due.

Ohnobackagain · 01/10/2024 09:16

@Soubriquet you should be able to see from the sending email address. Most scam ones have an alias that may look authentic but when you mouseover you can see something obviously not real, or with one letter change or something. In the email, is there a tracking ID? If so, when you go to the royal mail site NOT using the email link, does entering the tracking ID give you details or say ‘not found’?

https://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item

SoupDragon · 01/10/2024 09:19

The header on the genuine email I got from Royal Mail this week looks different to your screenshot.

I do like the bit that says no one will try to deliver it on yours 😂 Sounds pretty accurate!

Probably a scam, but would it have gone through on the official website if it wasn’t?
Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 09:19

I didn’t enter a tracking number but what I did do, was click the Royal Mail email to see if it matched. It came up as [email protected] which sent some flags up to me too which is why I went through the official website rather than click the link.

I can totally see how people fall for this scam. It does look legitimate

SoupDragon · 01/10/2024 09:21

The sender of mine is "no-reply at royalmail.com"

NewMum0305 · 01/10/2024 09:21

Convincing! For me, the capital Y on the ‘You’ of ‘Thank You’ is the giveaway. Scam emails always seem to capitalise random words for no reason!

Ohnobackagain · 01/10/2024 09:22

@Soubriquet that email address is definitely not royal mail. It’s a Japanese domain for a start! I was about to post a pic of one I have from ‘The AA’ but I’m not a member and the email address behind the alias is some random gmail one 🫣.

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 09:24

Looks like I avoided it. Thanks. Like I said though, I can totally see how people fall for it

I'm yours it says "no one of our drivers..."

That doesn't even make sense.

Clearly a scam.
