5? 6?

MiriamMay · 30/09/2024 16:05

About 5

Dontlletmedownbruce · 30/09/2024 16:06

6

Verite1 · 30/09/2024 16:07

5 or 6?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 30/09/2024 16:07

How long is a piece of string? I know 4 year olds who could read it and 10 year olds who couldn't. What is the purpose of the question?

Playdoughcaterpillar · 30/09/2024 16:07

7 or 8. There are some harder words like fussed and screams.

RoundAgain · 30/09/2024 16:07

I would think about year 1 but my son went way past that in the first week of learing to read and was reading chapter books by week 6 of reception without being taught to read. He now has an ASD diagnosis. Advanced reading is an indicator that checks should be made for ND.

Frozenberries · 30/09/2024 16:08

year one? So 5/6?

TheReturnOfFeathersMcGraw · 30/09/2024 16:08

Are they actually reading it or have they memorised it from it being read to them (very common)

tealandteal · 30/09/2024 16:09

Well I know some that could read this at 5 and some that would struggle at 9. Why are you asking? Is there something we can help with?

MiriamMay · 30/09/2024 16:09

I’ve worked as a TA with 4 and 5 year olds for years and there’s always a wide range of reading abilities. Some 4/5 year olds would struggle with that but others would definitely be able to read it.

BodenCardiganNot · 30/09/2024 16:09

One of mine would have read that with ease at 4. The other one would have been over 5.

ZippyDenimBear · 30/09/2024 16:10

Advanced 4 or 5 year old.

On track for a 6 or 7 year old.

LadyGrey33 · 30/09/2024 16:10

7

lopdododo · 30/09/2024 16:10

Thanks for your responses.

DS is 5, every book he brings home is much too easy for him and his teacher does not seem to be bothered about pushing him. I have spoken to them and they said he needs to continue with these books.

I bought some books to read with him at home, but they're too easy too. I wanted to ascertain what age this book is aimed at, to see what I should get next.

If that makes any sense.

Advanced Reception child or average year 1 child. 👦

Purposefullyporous · 30/09/2024 16:12

Realistically 8.
Possibly 6 if a good reader.
My 6yo couldn't read this with ease. She could probably read it but would need lots of supervision at it would be like getting blood out of a stone.
My son who is 9 could read it with ease and probably could have at 8.
I think 8 to independently read this with ease.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/09/2024 16:12

There is such a range of what's normal here. Some kids could comfortably read that kind of text as preschoolers. Some would still struggle with it at 7 or 8, or even older. Average is probably somewhere in between.

Why are you asking the question?

ILoveAnnaQuay · 30/09/2024 16:13

About 5 or 6. Probably Y1, maybe Y2.

Thfrog · 30/09/2024 16:15

Why don't you just go to a book shop abd buy some books that look harder then?

Thfrog · 30/09/2024 16:16

My child is 4 and there's no way they could read it but I'm not going to make them feel shit about it.

Bellsandthistle · 30/09/2024 16:16

Keep in mind that being able to “read” the text doesn’t necessarily mean the child has good comprehension. There is a lot more that goes into reading than being able to read the words.

X post.

Why not just get different books from the library for him? He can whip through the school books quickly and then read what he likes? That's what we did with dd in reception. It doesn't really matter if the school books are too easy as they are typically super short at that age.

The teacher will assess his reading at various points through the year. They won't just be looking at decoding though, but also for wider comprehension skills etc.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 30/09/2024 16:18

IME schools give easy books for reading at home because they assume that the child will be tired from school and they want to encourage reading as a habit rather than something that is challenging. Plus many schools only have a limited number of books and don’t want to run out of books to give your child.

Procrastinates · 30/09/2024 16:18

If your child is 5 and has just started reception but can read that then of course the books they will be coming home with will be much too simplistic as they will be based upon the phonics they've been taught to this point which is approximately 15 sounds.
