Apparently my car clutch going isn't covered under warranty

Because it's my fault for 'riding the clutch'.

This is a 3 year old car I bought 5 months ago with a 6 month warranty from a VW main dealer. Before this I had a car for 7 years with no clutch issues. How on earth can they blame my driving??

Is this a thing?

Bugger. I'm so pissed off. It was the newest most expensive car I've ever bought!

I didn't think an automatic even had a clutch!

Edited

If it is a VW group automatic, (VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi, Porsche), it will have a very sophisticated clutch and its associated Direct Shift Gearbox). The are the best available but quite expensive. I cannot imagine why it would not be covered by the warranty though.

The OP has repeatedly said it's a manual car. Why are people still banging on about automatics? Seriously dudes.

Because they are consumable parts. It is possible to wreck a clutch in 5 months let alone 3 years and 5 months. It is also possible to get to 100,000 miles on the original.

The problem for the dealer is that wear on the clutch totally depends on driving style and for that reason they are excluded from standard warranties.

OP the previous owner might have been driving the car in such a way that has significantly shortened its lifespan but your 5 months of normal wear and tear is what has pushed it over the edge.

They should investigate though as clutches have other problems that could be a sudden mechanical failure rather than wear or tear. I work at a garage and we had this recently. It was an 8 year old Golf and customer had done 1500 miles. We offered £300 as goodwill which was about half the cost and the customer was happy to pay the other half.

And yes a clutch definitely can wear out in 6000 miles. Personally I would be happy with a small contribution from the garage as goodwill.

The OP doesn't have an automatic car though, she has a manual.

She didn't say that until after I posted. If you look at her 12.10 post, it reads as if she has an automatic. She didn't clarify it was a manual until after I had posted.

OK, apparently I have a 2 year warranty so panic over. The guy who sold me the car told me not to panic 🙄 and that they would sort it. Fingers crossed.
