Residential Surveyors

Any residential surveyors out there who can tell me the highs and low of the job?
I am currently in a different career, but my degree and interest has always been in property and was hoping to become a surveyor. However, I came out of uni at the height of the property recession so pursued something else. Now, I'm in a job I'm not happy with and wanting a change. I have been given an opportunity to begin training as a residential surveyor, but want to go into it with my eyes open. I have 3 young children and would complete the training alongside my current job as we need the income. Can anyone give me some insight and give me realistic salary expectations once qualified? Thanks.

DH says they'll work you like a dog just like if you were at McDonalds, but he does love it! It's a mixture of investigation, science, rational thinking and storytelling- conveying the info to the layman, he likes that bit. Are you doing Sava?

The RICS "women in surveying" report wasn't entirely encouraging. As I recall the profession loses many women once they start families.

I was thinking about the Sava route, but spoken to a few people about my background and because my degree was RICS accredited I could actually skip that and go straight to a grad surveyor job and complete my APC, which saves a lot of time. I'd be competing with recently graduated students though.
