which ones and what do they do?

OP posts:
outforawalkbiatch · 29/09/2024 23:15

Vitamin D as I'm always deficient
Iron as my ferritin is a bit low

This multi vitamin as a sort of catch all because I've had intermittently low folic acid and various other bits (hashimotos and autoimmune conditions)

Magnesium Glycinate. Life changing. I genuinely believe that almost every adult needs to take a magnesium supplement due to our modern diets and the fact that our bodies don't absorb magnesium as well as they should as we get older. Sleep issues, muscle twitches, muscle cramps, decreasing cognitive abilities, etc, etc are improved by Magnesium Glycinate. Women going through peri-menopause quite often benefit greatly from taking a supplement.

Vitamin D
Multivitamin with iron
Calcium with magnesium.
Blood tests showed I was very low in D/iron and calcium.
Definite improvement especially around fatigue and tiredness if I take the above

Vitamin D (recommended in the UK from Oct to Mar)
Ferroglobin (iron, folic acid, B12) (blood test showed low iron and folic acid)

Thete · 29/09/2024 23:28

Myo inostol and berberine, for pcos symptoms and a high vitamin d as it’s always incredibly low. Biotin as my hair is falling out and people have recommended it to me, I’m probably going to drop that one though as I don’t think it’s making any difference.

neilyoungismyhero · 29/09/2024 23:29

Vitamin D - auto immune conditions thankfully in remission but I'm low on Vit D.

DelurkingAJ · 29/09/2024 23:29

Multivitamin primarily for vitamin D. Magnesium because it was recommended by my niece’s consultant for poor circulation (which runs through the family).

Flatandhappy · 29/09/2024 23:59

Vit D - ironically a lot of Aussies are deficient because we try and avoid sun exposure whenever we can. Vit B12 - I feel much better when I take it. I have recently started using magnesium oil sprayed on my feet at bedtime, it has definitely helped with sleep.

I take Macushield Gold capsules which are supposed to help with macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is hereditary and it’s in the family.
I take vitamin D with K2 and later in the day Magnesium Glycinate as it helps with bone density after menopause. Also considering collagen but the type for bone health.

Linnet · 30/09/2024 01:07

I take vitamin D all year round, I live in Scotland so the sun is a rare thing to see.
vitamin B12 and Magnesium which I’ve started taking before bed. I did take it in the morning but having read that you should take it at night to help with sleep I wonder if that’s why I was always so tired in the day 🤔
I also have collagen but I’ve got out of the habit of taking that so should really start again.

multi vitamins with minerals
b vitamins complex
the omega 3 fish oils
ginkgo biloba

These do :

  1. Multivitamins with Minerals
Function: Multivitamins with minerals are supplements that provide a variety of essential vitamins (e.g., A, C, D, E, and K) and minerals (e.g., calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron) that the body needs for general health. They help cover nutritional gaps, particularly for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or deficiencies. Benefits:
  • Supports overall health: By ensuring adequate intake of vitamins and minerals that might be lacking in one's diet.
  • Boosts immune system: Vitamins like C and D play a significant role in immune function.
  • Promotes bone health: Calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D are essential for maintaining strong bones.
  • Improves energy levels: B vitamins and iron contribute to reducing fatigue and enhancing energy production.
  1. B Vitamin Complex
Function: B vitamin complex refers to a group of eight B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12) that play a crucial role in metabolism, energy production, and the maintenance of brain and nerve function. Benefits:
  • Energy production: B vitamins, particularly B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B7 (biotin), help convert food into energy.
  • Brain health: B6, B9 (folic acid), and B12 are key for maintaining healthy brain function and supporting mental clarity. They also play a role in mood regulation and reducing the risk of cognitive decline.
  • Cell health: B9 (folate) and B12 are essential for the production of red blood cells and DNA synthesis, supporting healthy cell growth and repair.
  • Nervous system: B12 is particularly important for the maintenance of nerve cells and preventing neurological damage.
  1. Omega-3 Fish Oils
Function: Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are essential fats primarily found in fish oil that have numerous health benefits, especially related to heart and brain health. Benefits:
  • Heart health: Omega-3s help reduce inflammation in the arteries, lower triglyceride levels, and may reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Brain function: DHA, in particular, is important for brain health and cognitive function, with potential benefits for memory, learning, and mood regulation. It may also reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Joint health: Omega-3s can help reduce joint pain and stiffness, especially in individuals with inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Eye health: DHA plays a role in maintaining eye health, particularly in preventing age-related macular degeneration.
  1. Ginkgo Biloba
Function: Ginkgo biloba is an herbal supplement derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo tree. It has been traditionally used for its potential cognitive and circulatory benefits. Benefits:
  • Improves cognitive function: Ginkgo is commonly used to support memory and enhance mental clarity. It is believed to increase blood flow to the brain, potentially improving cognitive function and focus.
  • Antioxidant properties: Ginkgo contains powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress, which is associated with aging and various diseases.
  • Circulation and vascular health: Ginkgo may improve blood circulation, especially in small blood vessels, which can benefit individuals with conditions like peripheral artery disease.
  • Potential mood stabilizer: Some studies suggest ginkgo might help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, though further research is needed to confirm this.

I take Vitanim C, because I'm not fond of eating fruit, so it's a necessary supplement.

I usually have one tablet each evening for a week, then take a week off.

I take the Barefoot Nutrition one

Nannyfannybanny · 30/09/2024 09:48

Vit D,, because I have had skin cancer several times and can't spend long in the sun. Check out the late great Michael Mosley,if you were very deficient in a lot of these things, GP s would be telling you, and doing prescriptions for anything needed. Too many people self medicate, waste money, most vitamins are water soluble and wee'd out.

FussyPud · 30/09/2024 09:50

I take vitamin d (it’s not very sunny here), magnesium (cramps and exhaustion), and folic acid (my folate is usually quite low) as tablets. I have b12 injections too, as my levels used to be through the floor and I like being able to think straight.

itwasnevermine · 30/09/2024 09:53

Iron - seems to help with my energy.

General multivitamin

Just started taking some digestive supplements as apparently that can help your immune system

LushLemonTart · 30/09/2024 09:58

This one. Tastes nice. It's 3 for 2 at H&B at the moment. I'm over 50.
