Cooking = eating less

Does anyone else find if they're the one cooking, by the time you sit down to eat, your appetite is gone and you eat fraction of what you would if it was cooked for you?

My mum agrees but a couple of friends think it's odd.

I first noticed it when I was the one doing the Christmas dinner, and thought it was just the stress of that. However, since then I've noticed whenever someone else cooks for me, or eating out, or takeaway, my appetite is normal, but when I cook, after I'm about a third of the way through, I'm done. Not a bad thing when you want to lose a pound or two, but irritating if you've spent ages cooking and you feel like you haven't reaped the delicious rewards.

Yes, but usually only if I'm cooking for guests!

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 29/09/2024 19:35

Yup. I never actually eat at mealtimes with the family now. We have a mix of dietary needs and by the time I've made 3 separate meals to all be ready at the same time...I'm over food.

I think it’s because when you cook, you are constantly trying things for seasoning, taste, whether it’s cooked correctly. Then you’re a bit sick of it by the time you sit down and eat!

I agree and I'm not tasting the food as I go either.

It's good to know that it's not unusual. I like the fact others are enjoying my food, I just wish I could appreciate it as much. It feels like such a waste.

I definitely don’t experience this and I do nearly all the cooking. But it’s probably because I think my cooking is better than other people’s. 😂 I like what I cook, but Dh or friends, probably not as nice, though I’d still eat it. I’m a bit of a food snob though.

Yes but I think it's because I'm tasting as I go and sometimes eating small bits of cheese/broccoli/whatever

unsync · 29/09/2024 21:29

Yes, especially if I'm cooking meat.
