I'm so fed up with breakfast food.

It's not that I don't like things like cereal or porridge or eggs on toast or waffles or whatever in principle. I'm just really bored with breakfast being this unique category of meal where you can only have certain things without being considered weird. I'd rather just have a normal meal. Maybe I want a roast dinner for breakfast. Maybe I want a Greek salad. Maybe I want a curry (do not say "kedgeree", which is just a notorious breakfast food (kippers) disguised as curry).

Is this just me? Am I a weirdo?

I'm going to experiment with Greek salad for breakfast tomorrow and report back on any reactions (adverse or otherwise). Obviously I'm secretly hoping that someone treats me like a massive loon so that I can say I told you all so, but it would also be quite nice if no one bats an eyelid and I have to admit that you're all right 😀

I hate sweet breakfasts. Won’t eat cereal or croissants, not keen on fruit. Get bored of eggs every day. Trying to avoid too much bread.

so if there’s leftovers in the fridge I heat those up for brekkie. Yesterday was Thai pork, the other day curry, shep pie, lasagne. My family think I’m odd but I don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️

ANightingaleSang · 29/09/2024 17:22

I promise you, nobody cares what you eat for breakfast. Just have whatever you fancy. Just not fish in the office, that's antisocial any time of day, but especially before midday. 😊

I think the only weird bit is you fussing about what you think others might think about it. People don’t care and overall, they eat vastly different breakfast meals around the world

Exactly!

And, OP, cold pizza is a very normal breakfast (we specifically order too much pizza in order to have enough for breakfast).

smalltoe · 29/09/2024 17:24

OP I'm totally with you. Most cultures used to eat a simple version of the sane foods they ate later in the day. Left overs plus rice type thing.

I am so sick of every cafe abd restaurant that offers brunch basically just offering variations of breakfast food. Scrambled eggs , poached eggs, eggs Benedict, omelette, Turkish eggs, shamshouka, pancakes. So bloody boring.

onwardandupwards · 29/09/2024 17:26

My eldest ds (19) often eats cheese on toast and a bowl of tomato soup for breakfast or a chicken nugget and cheese toastie. This morning he had garlic bread topped with super noodles and a berry smoothie.

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2024 17:30

Just tell people you had an early breakfast and this is a mid morning snack.

DillyDeclutter · 29/09/2024 17:30

I had a Japanese housemate at uni who was utterly baffled by British approaches to breakfast. He used to cook rice in the morning. I don't have time or energy to think of three proper meals a day. I just need an easy breakfast.

Precipice · 29/09/2024 17:57

I get what you mean in one sense, OP, since you mentioned you eat breakfast 'out' - I remember one time when I had a morning flight I wanted to eat a meal at the airport, because I had a long train trip after the flight, but even though I found something that looked all right looking through the options online, the place only started serving its normal menu from 11 or 12, and all you could get in the morning was 'brunch options'. I generally consider such things poor value, so it was nothing for me.

Greek salad is one of my favourite breakfasts! Though I do get comments from dh 😂

Honourspren · 29/09/2024 18:15

I favour Japanese breakfasts. Rice, miso soup, eggs, meat and vegetables. Really sets you up for the day.

But you can't, because other people start pulling faces and saying they couldn't possibly eat (name of perfectly normal meal you fancy) in the morning. It's a whole thing.

What kind of life do you lead where you let people comment on your food choices?
I like egg fried rice for breakfast. Or pasta.

The same life as the rest of us, I suppose, where I think about stuff that people have said to me and wonder whether more people would agree with them or with me 💁

I’m not sure, though, because I’ve definitely read that there are different traditions about what is eaten for breakfast in different parts of the world. Asia is a vast area and I’d be surprised if all countries within it habitually serve meals of infinite variety as the first meal of the day

Definitely not all countries She was obviously just from one country but I can't remember which one as it was about 30 years ago!

StressedQueen · 29/09/2024 23:16

You can eat what you like! I personally love breakfast food and will always eat cheese and avocado on toast with a yoghurt or do a fry up but my husband much prefers grabbing leftover dinner. There have been many a times when I come downstairs on the weekend to him eating pizza or pasta in front of the TV at 9am in the morning! I do try and encourage my children to eat proper breakfast food though, especially my older ones, or honestly to eat anything at all in the mornings as they're always late and seem to wait until snack time to eat!! Which isn't until about 10am which I think is too late if you are awake by 7.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2024 23:28

If you're eating out there are some cafes which have quite a large range of foods available in the morning.
However there's a practical reason why something like a roast dinner wouldn't be offered till lunchtime, which is simply the time taken to cook a big joint.

sarsaparillatree · 29/09/2024 23:35

I used to share an office with a chap that always had soup for breakfast. I admit I didn't like the smell first thing in the morning - probably wouldn't have bothered me later in the day.

Doingthework · 29/09/2024 23:40

@CarterBeatsTheDevil

just eat what you want . Kellogg’s convenienced the western world that cereal was the only option.

steak and eggs, eggs Benedict, eggs royal, cottage cheese on toast, Ulster fry , black pudding, pancakes, waffles, ranchos huevos all staples in our house kids love it too!!

just free yourself of judgment and eat what you want x

Yes plenty of people will pull faces and say you’re odd. Because as you’ve said, there are “typical breakfast foods” here (and totally different typical breakfast foods elsewhere).

BUT

this doesn’t mean “you can’t”. It just means you need to ignore people and eat what you want. Probably some of us were confused about “can’t” because many people have breakfast at home and who is to tell you what to do in your own house? But if you tend to eat in front of others, you’re going to get asked a few times to start with, just say you prefer it, works better for you, and unless they’re rude they should shut up about it soon enough.

Reactions from who though?

If it's people you live with, then a handy "Fuck off, I'll eat what I like when I like", will surely do the trick. If you're eating out, then surely if its on the menu then it's fair game?

I'm the opposite to you, I don't do food in the morning. As far as I'm concerned all you weirdos who eat before about 11am are sick freaks. But I'll happily have a full English at 5pm, or a bowl of Shreddies at 11pm. And if anyone looks at me funny then they're getting a bowl of shreddies over their head.

SnowFrogJelly · 30/09/2024 00:11

Kedgeree is nice..

Cobblersorchard · 30/09/2024 00:13

I like a sandwich for breakfast, sometimes egg mayo or ham which isn’t too weird but also chicken or cheese.

Also egg fried rice. Random leftovers.

No shits given!

I do have greek yoghurt sometimes or on toast things too. But basically anything I fancy. If I make myself a nice packed lunch for the office I can pretty much guarantee I’ve eaten it by 9.15am.

I've been to Nepal and Tibet a few times. My favourite breakfast is a spicy lentil and potato soup with a puffy fried bread. The Nepali people I was with always had a mountain of Dahl baht with pickles - the same as every other meal. I was staying i. A guesthouse n the Indian border and the owner made the whole team Dahl baht every morning. I was the only westerner and was very much over the mountains of rice so I started to skip breakfast. The cook was most concerned about this and started to make me a 'special breakfast' - egg and chips. I have never had anything more delicious after weeks of rice and lentils at every meal.
